Seriously Considering A Cabin

I have our first WDW trip booked for Dec 2. - Dec. 8 at The Poly. I wasn't really considering the Poly to begin with. After researching we had our heart set on a FW Cabin. I decided to go with The Poly because I got a decent rate and monorail access. Now I am having my doubts. I know the Poly would be a great resort. Perfect location great transportation the works but I just don't get that feeling like I do when I look at the Cabins. My DH is a country guy at heart. I would be happy in a cardboard box as long as I was at Disney. My DH loves the outdoors and peace and quiet after a busy day. We have 3 kids ages (when we travel) 10, 7 and 4. We would definatly get a electric cart. I guess I am just looking for opinions for our situation.

Sounds like Ft. Wilderness cabins would be perfect for your family. Yes, the Poly is an amazing resort (never stayed there, so I don't know from personal experience,) but my family stayed at the cabins last September and we absolutely fell in love with FW. Our 2 children slept in the bedroom and my husband and I slept on the murphy bed, which wasn't bad at all. Having the kitchen was super-convenient and we loved being able to park our van right out front. We also rented a cart and that made getting around so easy and enjoyable.

Finally, the atmosphere can't be beat - it is so quiet and relaxing and laid-back - just what we needed after hectic days of park-hopping!

Whatever choice you make, have a blast! I agree with you - doesn't really matter where you're staying, as long as you're at Disney!

I guess it's all in what you prefer, there are alot of pro and cons for both. Poly. is my dream resort and one day I will stay there, whenever I can afford it . That being said do you need a kitchen ? With three children you might, that's one plus of the cabins. Let us know what you decide, both are great.

Just a thought....

We couldn't decide between the cabins or Beach Club so we're doing a split stay 5 days one 5 the other. I've never done a split stay so hopefully it all works out and I feel like we're getting two different types of vacations in one.

Thanks for the great advice so far...keep 'em coming!!! I thought that the kitchen would be great to have. We will be on the dining plan but my 7 & 4 y.o. like to graze and they could be hungry at ant given time. As to the split stay..I would love to do that but my DH isn't a big traveler and he likes things kept as easy as possible.

My family LOVES, loves, loves Ft. Wilderness cabins. We've stayed there probably 14 times. We love having our own little place. Being able to walk outside on the deck, driving right up to your door, the kitchen, the 2 tv's, the peace and quiet of the campground, renting the carts, Trails End restaurant, taking the boat to the Magic Kingdom.

To show you just how much we love the cabins~ hubby and I took an adult only trip in Sept '06... decided we should stay somewhere else {with 3 kids our choices are limited} so we checked into Animal Kingdom. Just didn't feel right. So the next morning we checked out and checked into a cabin. Even without the kids it was still our HOME away from HOME!

I've stayed at All Star Sports once, Dixie Landings once, OKW once, WL once, and Ak for one night. We've stayed at the cabins more times than I can count. I wish I was there right now!!!!

Thank you for this post. My DH is not that into Disney and I really want him to enjoy the trip as well. I really love the convenience that The Poly would bring but I just don't have that feeling when I look at it. I am leaning towards FW I just hope that it is the right choice.

If your DH isn't really that into Disney as you say, then the hectic ambiance of somewhere like the Poly (which for others can be exciting) might be offputting for someone who prefers peace and quiet.
If a full-on luxury, busy WDW experience is what you want, then somewhere like the Poly will be great, but for a more relaxing time, then as has been said, you can't beat FW.

This is very helpful advice. I did not grow up in Montana and I love the hustle and bustle of people. I also love everything Disney...growing up in Sothern California I have been to DL over 30 times and I can never get tired of it. I was thinking mostly of convenience of the monorail if we have tired little ones. I am planning on hitting The Magic kingdom and Epcot at least twice while there. If my DH is not up for the second round and I go with just the kiddos is the transportation easy enough from FW?

I love this post. Sometimes I think my husband should find a friend to vacation with . Seriously after much discussion (ok me talking and my DH saying I don't care ..do what you want ) I think I am going to go with the cabins. Can you request (I know just a request) a certain loop? If so which is a good one? I would like to be close to the trading post (if this is even possible) and as close to the center of it all, as one could get.

FW is one of my favorite places on Disney property (if not my favorite) to spend time at - walking, taking a wagon ride, watching the campfire movie and making s'mores, etc.

It's not hard to get to the parks. It sounds like you'd really enjoy it!

DH and I love the cabins and wouldn't stay anywhere else.You don't have to worry about noise on either side of you or above you like in a hotel and you have room to stretch out.
If you are looking to be close to the Meadows trading post, pool and campfire program request loop 2100,2200 or 2300, it is about 1/2 mile to the Meadows. There is also a trading post near the boat to Magic Kingdom. We usually stop there for supplies before we get on the purple bus back to the cabin. There is also a pool which is between loop 2500 and 2700.
You will have a great time in the cabins.Let us know how you enjoyed it.

I just love you disers. I am getting the greatest advice. My only concern was the transportation to the parks (I think in all honesty the only thing that really appealed to me about the Poly was the monorail). We plan on renting a golf cart so the internal transportation won't be a concern. I know that if my DH hates the trip it will be the last one for him but if he loves it (and the cabins are right up his alley) then I see a few more in his future.

It is VERY easy to get to the Magic Kingdom from FW...just a little boat ride and you are there...and those boats are much less crowded than the monorail esp at opening and closing times. You can also take the boat over to the Contemporary and hop on a monorail there that you can take to MAgic Kingdom or connect at the TTC to Epcot. A bus ride from FW will get you to anyplace in DisneyWorld including AK and MGM...have a great time! I have been to Disney more times than I can count (I only live an hour away) and every time I go, I find something new
