September 2, 2012 - Magic - NYC to Canada

We have never been to NYC before and would love some pointers from those who have, or from those who have already made their own plans and could possibly help us out. Here's what we are thinking:

-fly in from Memphis on 9/1 and spend the night somewhere cheap, clean, and somewhat near the port
-cruise 9/2-9/7
-stay in NYC somewhere on 9/7 and 9/8, and see the WTC memorial, SoL, Times Square, Central Park and perhaps a show (I know that's a lot to cram in a few days though).

Questions:

1. Where should we stay on 9/1, and how do we get there from the airport? Which airport should we fly in on?
2. How do we get to the port the next morning (disney transfers or some way less expensive)?
3. Specific excursions for the Canadian ports?
4. Hotel recommendations for 9/7 and 9/8, based on the things we want to do in NYC?

Thanks--I'm a total newbie on all this NYC stuff but I'm a bit of a control freak with vacations so I feel like I NEEEED to know all this stuff now. :-)

I live in the NY Metro area and work downtown (within walking distance of [Occupy] Wall St, Statue of Liberty and 9/11 memorial).

Airports - NY has some of the most dreadful airports around. I would not suggest a car rental or even mass transit from the NY airports to NYC. You really need to use a Taxi. NY has three main airports - LaGuardia (LGA), JFK, and Newark (EWR). LGA would probably be he cheapest taxi ride ~$30 to midtown manhattan. JFK would be most extensive.

I cant really help w hotel recommendations, but lodging can be VERY expensive in NY.

That said, staying in NJ (on the Path train line) could work. But I think staying in Manhattan would give you a better overall experience. That said, the location of the cruise terminal is not near the tourist areas on Manhattan (in fact the far west side of Manhattan can be a bit seedy [strip clubs] and deserted in off hours). Head for hotels between 3rd and 8th avenues and I suggest subways when traveling/touring within Manhattan - but take a taxi to and from the port. From any hotel in midtown manhattan I cant see a taxi costing more than $15 or $20 to the port. Subways are much safer than lore has you think - even late at night.

To be honest WTC memorial, SoL, Times Square, Central Park and perhaps a show are all do-able in a day or two. You need to order WTC tickets waaay in advance. They are free, but are proving to be very popular. SoL tix may best be ordered in advance - as the lines to buy a SoL ticket can be long if the weather is nice.

As for Bway shows, unless you are looking to see a specific show, dont bother to buy tickets in advance. You can go to a TKTS booths (there are a couple in the city) where u can buy same day show tickets for half price - and many first run shows will have seats available via TKTS - but Disney shows are not on TKTS all that often.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks, silmarg, for all the info!

And thanks to everyone else for the welcomes!

Can't wait to get back on the Magic. I have missed her!

Holy Fish Water Mickey ... no one has posted in days!!!:scared1:

Im wondering if anyone has started an FE list and are we as a group do anything thing else? Meet andGreet?

Ahoy folks!

We are booked for this cruise and are trying to turn it into a family reunion of sorts.

For now it is: DW Nicole, DFiL George, DMiL Norma and myself.

It will be our second cruise and my in-laws' first. Is there an FE group yet?

I got to vacation in the Maritimes several times when I was younger, and I love visiting there. I am definitely looking for tips, especially for the NYC part of the trip!

Welcome aboard!! This is going to be our 2nd cruise as well. Can't wait to get this cruise started!! :thumbsup2

Well that's 4 of us, who else is in for a meet / greet.......:rotfl:

We are up for a meet and greet!!

Ok... I confess... Im a planner:lmao:

Meet and Greet... on the 2nd( after boarding and before safty drill) at 2pm at the Promenade Lounge. Great place to sit down with the entire family, have a drink and chat with "new" friends. Could be a good location in case we have sprinkles or a place to get out of the sun.
Sound good?
And if we are going to recognize each other... we better be posting some pics of ourselves. Now don't be shy!

That works for me. On our last go around the meet was on the secret deck on 7, I don't think it was conducive to meeting and greeting.

On a completely different thought, does this DIS cruise have a name yet? If not, here are my suggestions:

"Cruise to the True North" referring to the Canadian national anthem.
"With glowing hearts, we're cruising to Canada" also from the anthem.
"Cruising side by side and hand in hand" based on the theme from Epcot's Canada pavilion.
"Take off! It's a beauty way to go!" from Bob and Doug MacKenzie

Works for me! I've used the Promenade Lounge for a Meet and Greet before.

Secert deck 7 is a great place... 2 doors down from us!:cool1: Also a great place to take a group photo!:yay:

Love the names too.:thumbsup2
My vote would be "Cruising side by side and hand in hand" love the song.

Hey guys!! Sorry, haven't been on here much lately. Just seems that I don't have that much time for the computer these days.

Like the idea of a cruise name. My vote's for Cruising side by side and hand in hand. A cruise meet at the promenade lounge sounds awesome. That's where we met on last cruise.

Hopefully once we get into the new year we can step up on the planning and communicating on this thread!! I'm sure it will make the time pass much quicker! :thumbsup2
