Sept. 2009 @ WDW! Be a Pop Tart 2009~come share your(Bounce Back or NOT)Dates !!!

At the meeting that we had with Jacob's teachers last week we were discussing why in the world do they try to teach kids differently than when we were kids. Example: 24x15, they now teach them this way 5x4, 5x20, 10x4, 10x 20, and add the totals. To me it's too easy to forget that the 1 in the 15 spot is in the 10's position. Plus, when you have a kid like Jacob that hates to write, that is more writing. I think the book companies come up with new ways and the school districts decide to give it a try.

Well, may have messed up the table. I have been doing it outside in the yard and of course there was so much dew this morning it is soaked. Went out to try to knock some of the water off and when I looked at my hand, it had stain all over it. Also, thought I had until Wednesday to get this done before it rained. Now it is suppose to rain in the morning. I may just spray the protectant on it and bring it in and try again Wednesday with painting the bottom.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Monday!
Melissa

Just wanted to pop in and say hi all!
Picking up my DM @airport later today...might not be around much this week since between Disboards & Facebook DM & I will be competing for computer time :surfweb:

Morning all! Haven't been around much-dd had braces put on last week, so I pretty much lived at the orthodontist last week. Today she's back to the dentist, then ds to the dr (his cough won't go away ), then dd's band concert tonight. Enough for one day?

wic--thanks for the updates on Nancy, and sorry she's not doing better. Let her know we're sending pixie dust her way. Sorry the employment classes weren't more helpful--dh has been to a few seminars at work already, and has a presentation by the DOL this afternoon. Hopefully, he'll be able to find something quickly--something besides working in a prison, that is!

jm--don't tell, but I get rid of the kids' toys when they're gone, too. They have so many, they never even notice. :rolleyes1 Dh always asks why I don't make them go through them, but then they start playing with all of them, and reminiscing, and before we know it, they're all keepers and they're spread all over the house! Dd is finally starting to outgrow her need to keep everything, mainly because she wants to move into the spare bedroom.

ang--guess what theme she wants for her new room? Twilight, of course! Only 5 more days until the movie comes out on dvd (I know because I get to hear the countdown regularly!). LOL about the rocks--mine like to keep a rock (or twenty) from every trip we take. They used to be in a bag (and a container, and all across the windowsill) in their room, but I finally convinced them they'd be okay outside in a "rock garden" (which is really just a pile of river rock that borders one of our sidewalks).

sg--so, it's spring break now--do you have company? Or will you? Or are you still waiting to be let in on your plans for the week! Ours is in 2 weeks, and we'll be at WDW! Anyone need a postcard or anything?

DivaK--Have fun with your mom, and good luck getting some computer time. Still haven't made it onto FB yet--got a new Ipod and trying to figure out how the thing works is taking all my spare time. I'm hopeless--should just ask my 11 year old for lessons. BTW, I read on the free dining watch thread that an anonymous travel agent friend of a disboarder is reporting free dining for this summer beginning 8/16. I thought that's when you were going--did you already book free dining under a pin code, or were you using another discount? Maybe it'll help convince some of the other Diva's reluctant dh's to sign on!

Have a great week, all!

And :faint: another twilight fan ???? can I :faint: again ??? :lmao:

And finally going back tomorrow... :cloud9:

thunderbird1 - you will enjoy that Ipod. Mine goes everywhere with me.

Any plans to go to TL while at WDW? We are going March 28th, if it opens on time.

Melissa,
Is your DS learning everyday math too? That is what DS learned here and it was so much more complicated for a lot of kids but especially ones who need things done using the least amount of steps possible. They changed DS over from touch math to the everyday method in 3rd grade which confused him something awful because he was just understanding the first method. Then I found out the middle school teachers were not trained in the everyday method and could not help the kids who never were able to grasp it. Our summer between 5th and 6th grade were spend going back and teaching him the good old fashioned method and he said it was easier for him and he did grasp it before entering middle school thank goodness.

I am sorry to hear about your table and hope you can salvage the job. Darn humidity in Florida.

TB,
Have you read the Twilight books or seen the movie? DS read them before me and tried convincing me to read them but I wouldn't till I saw the movie and really liked it. Then I couldn't put the books down after that. I am counting down till the release too and know which stores have better extras and cheaper prices too.

I don't know if there are Walmarts in Canada but I heard they are supposed to have a section of the store dedicated to just twilight items at low prices so that might help decorate DD room. Also hot topic online has a blanket from the movie for around $20 when it is in stock if you wanted to get her that.

Rocks, rocks it looks like all kids love rocks. No wonder why the pet rock was suck a hot item. Maybe it's time to revive the pet rock once more and make the next fortune. lol Wouldn't it be funny if we could convince our kids to paint faces on their rocks and sell them to their friends. Then instead of kids with rocks we would have kids with lots of money.

Diva K,
Enjoy your time with your mother and don't worry about us we will still be here.

Timmy,
Get with it sister and read those books or at least see the movie. Then you can be one of us. lol Sounds like you are all better if your going back to work tomorrow. That's great to hear.

Angela

Ang, why is something no one knows or understands called "everyday math"? I know, not your fault. I need to ask my neighbor if her daughter is being taught that way in Middle School here. Homeschooling sounds better and better. I think I said this on another thread but instead of cutting jobs in schools, the administrators that make these decisions need to be cut or at least a cut in pay. Just ridiculous!

Table actually looks great. Between the water and me trying to get the water off, it caused some spots, but I like it! I like an imperfect (is that a word?) look, or old look. Like me!:rotfl:

Ok, once I finish the Kingdom Keepers I am going to give Twilight a try. I still haven't finished Marley and Me, but I got to the chapter called "The Big Meadow" or something like that and figured it must be where he dies and I just haven't been able to finish it. I was reading it while Jacob was in therapy or in line to pick him up, but didn't want to sit there and cry in front of everyone. Need to go on the patio and finish it and have a good cry. Don't know why I try to read books that I know are going to make me cry and if it is a dog, I will cry every time.

Hope everyone has a great day tomorrow. Refrigerator repair guy should be here. The man is going to think I'm after him or something.

I guess it was someone's everyday math. lol I read a story about it that it was developed by a team of college students at a college here in Illinois and someone had a connection with the schools and got the method adopted into the school system. I guess it's about who you know not how good it is. lol Kind of like politics here in Illinois.

I think in our school system it was bad planning with our middle school not knowing the method. Knowing our teachers at our middle school though they probably protested learning a new method themselves by saying the kids should understand it and be independent by 6th grade and they got their way.

I am so glad you were able to salvage your table.

Kingdom Keepers was good but I think it was geared toward a younger age group. I am hoping the next book is better.

JM, when I read your first post I was going to suggest that you add more water spots to make it look planned. I would make sure that the table is completely dry before putting poly on it though. Trapped water will come back to haunt you and it does not take much. Chocolate chip cookies, molding, icing and a great many other good things came by mistake. :thumbsup2

Timmie, I buy Twilight books for the local schools, at the kids request, does that count? I have yet to read one though. :upsidedow

TB, no grands yesterday. Do not know what the week will bring. The 17 year old does not need care and the other is now 11 and likes to lay around watching the same TV shows over and over again. Only saving grace is that they are Disney shows. He had such promise before he got the sports bug. I was far too sick to take care of anyone yesterday anyway. I was getting over this blasted cold and then had one of my lovely acid attacks which left me with a fever and chills and inability to eat. For me that is a dangerous sign.:rotfl: Better today though, I think.

Ang, I do not like the one size fits all educational system. With so much new technology there are so many better ways for kids to learn nowadays but then they would not need so many teachers would they? It is scary how much money we pay per student and how little gets taught and how poor many of our school buildings are. I am for vouchers. Competition is a good thing.

Diva K, enjoy your mom's visit and we shall forgive you for not coming by BUT we expect you to be right back as soon as you get rested up. We miss you when you are not here. You add color to our lives. :wizard:

Ohhhh shoot I choose the wrong day to come back to work.. everybody will be drinking beer and by the time I get to work they will be bringing their guts out to us :faint: mama mia!!!

Kristin, your Irish Mickey is way too cute. Thanks for sharing him and have a Happy St. Patricks day yourself.

DS forgot to wear green and he is not going to be happy when I pick him up because they pinch each other if they don't wear green. Knowing him he will try to convince everyone that his underwear are green to avoid the pinching. lol

SG, glad to hear you are feeling better today. Take care of yourself!

I feel like a good Mom for once. Yesterday I pulled out a shirt and stopped myself, "Wait, that has green, let's save it for tomorrow!" And today I remembered and gave Jacob the green shirt.

Got the table under the patio last night because it was suppose to rain. Of course, we don't get any rain. It is getting so bad here with water shortage that they are discussing limiting watering our yards even more. I find it kind of odd that I don't see more of the zero landscaping here.:confused3

Ok, so the refrigerator repair come today. Apologizing for not getting this thing fixed the first two times. He works on it for two hours and figures there is no fix, so he has ordered me a new door. Thankfully it is under warranty because otherwise it would be $900:scared1: ! Actually, no warranty, we would just keep opening the door for ice.

Jacob has a dentist appointment this afternoon. I hope he doesn't have much homework because he will be worthless after the dentist. Ang, how does Will handle the dentist?

Melissa,
I have an idea put the table out in the yard and then you will get rain. :thumbsup2 We broke records today and got 75 degree weather. I am so happy to see DS outside running around.

He got in the car and first thing he said was "mom I forgot my green but I told everyone my underwear were green but they pinched me anyway." Do I know him or what. :rotfl:

Glad they are taking care of that refrigerater. Sadly, I don't think they make any appliances to last anymore.

Will and the dentist are only friends when he gets a cleaning otherwise he has panick attacks. He had his first fillings last summer and I think it was BS because he never had cavities before that. We had to find a new dentist and Will asked to go in alone because we both thought he would just be getting the cleaning we scheduled. He came out pale as a ghost and when I asked what happened he said he didn't know but his mouth was numb and then he just lost it and started crying. I was so upset that they didn't tell me and I found out they never explained to him what they were doing when they filled his teeth. So I need to find a new dentist. I only take him to the dentist in the summer and avoid the school year.

ADDED: I forgot to add that DS now blames DH for his cavities because he traveled with him on the truck last summer and his dad let him eat all the sweets and drink all the pop he desired. I don't buy junk food or sweets and pop for the house. I don't think DH told him to brush his teeth either. YUK!! DS did love that DH allowed him to order chicken strips and pop for breakfast though.

JM--I am loving this Ipod! Took it to the grocery store last night, and even wore it while playing ds's video game with him yesterday. :woohoo: for multitasking! We probably will go to TL, but I'm not sure when, especially since it looks like they pushed the re-opening date. Are you hearing March 28? I don't think we'd make it that early in our trip, since it's our first day, but you never know. . . . :yay: for your table turning out okay, and :yay: :yay: for the fridge being covered by warranty!

Ang--haven't read Twilight yet (dd keeps re-reading it and loaning it out to her friends, which just aggravates her because none of them read it fast enough, in her opinion ), but I know I'll get to see the movie this weekend. We're actually in WA state, not Canada, and dd already has her sights set on the "ultimate collector's giftset" from Costco (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11379747&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US&s=1), so that's where we'll be Saturday morning. Some of her other friends are going to the various Friday night release parties but fortunately she'd rather get the big fan pack. Fortunately because then I don't have to stay up until midnight to get it, then until 2 am watching it with her. LOL about kids with lots of money instead of kids with lots of rocks--ain't that the truth! ROTFLOL about ds's green underwear (and you knowing that he'd say it)! And ds's cavities are definitely your dh's fault. We moms get blamed for everything else, so we must let something fall to the dads!

SG--Sorry to hear about the acid attack , but glad you're feeling better. What is it with kids watching the same shows over and over? I swear, when dd went through her Hannah Montana phase a couple of years ago, every time I watched it with her it was the same episode. I was starting to think there was only one, which they showed 10 times a day. At least it wasn't "Ed, Edd and Eddy"--that show is so annoying I finally banned it from our house! At least on the Disney channel you get Disney commercials!

DivaK--You're going to Padre Island? So jealous! I really wanted to get there when we were in TX last fall, but we just didn't have enough time. Have a (beach) ball!

Timmy--How bad was work last night? :scared: Do you ever want to see the color green again?

I helped out in ds's classroom yesterday, and they had a party with green grapes, kiwi, celery with green cream cheese, green tortilla chips, mint oreos and sprite with a little green jello powder added. :crazy2: Oh, and one chocolate coin for each child, but it was "wafer thin."

TB,
Sorry, I thought you said you were from Canada. Hmmmm, oh yeah that is Jan Jan that is from Canada. DUH!!!

I saw the costco collectors kit. I am just getting the one at Target. I don't have a costco near me and wouldn't use/wear the stuff in the collectors kit anyway. I was going to make it fun with DS and do the midnight thing but I just don't want to stand in line with a bunch of teen girls while DS tries to hid behind me when they look at him. Then I have to talk to the girls just to watch him squirm so I think I will save him the experience. lol

Diva K,
Going to the beach I love the beach you lucky woman. Enjoy!!!!

Timmy,
Are you back to your old self after being sick?

Have a wonderful day,
Angela
