"Can anyone tell me about Disneyland Paris and compare it to WDW? Please no that (like a typical American) I speak only English (and my British friends would say that I don't speak it well either!).
Karen"

First off, I don't remember any problems with my not speaking French at DLP.

You'd be better off comparing it to regular Disneyland, as it's very similar. That said, and I will assume you don't know Disneyland, I'll give my 15 cents worth.

There are 2 parks: DLP and the Studios. DLP is a small Magic Kingdom, (doesn't seem to be so far apart between areas, just like DL). Walk across a plaza and you are at the Studios, which seemed like a very small MGM Studios/ Hollywood Studios - whatever it's called now at WDW.

Very similar rides and shows (won't go into detail here because I was only there one day and you are getting a generalized first impression - Steamboat Will can give you more precise details).

What I remember being different is (1) the longer walk from the parking lot to the entrance. There are moving sidewalks that only cover about 1/2 the distance (now, this is not an extreme walk, but it just seems like you should be there when the moving sidewalk ends); (2) there is a food court at the entrance to DLP, full of people (it was cold when we were visiting in Oct). We ate in the Studios and had a not-so-great Croque Monsieur (ham and cheese); (3) there do not seem to be any decent-price Disney hotels; all were in the $400+ bracket per night and included tickets - as a solo traveler with a DLP annual pass, this was just too high; and (4) NO YEAR-ROUND FIREWORKS! Bummer, dude. I love DL and WDW fireworks - Wishes always brings tears to my eyes and had hoped for some. They seem to do them in the high-volume summer months and a few other special times.

Will be there myself Tues-Wed before our cruise.

Hi does anybody have an opinion on whether it’s worth purchasing a length of cruise spa pass, or just day spa passes. And does it get overcrowded in the spa, are sometimes of day better than others? And is it easy to shower at the spa after using the gym :thumbsup2

It is very easy to shower at the spa - the whole area is rather compact, and the women's changing room has nice large showers (so much bigger than the ones in the staterooms) with liquid soap and shampoo. There are disposable razors, q-tips, cottonballs, hairdryers. I don't know the policy on using the lockers if not having a spa treatment, but they may be available for use during gym workout - with easy-to-set locks. There are lounge chairs in the dressing area, so peaceful you might just kick back and relax in there.

Never used a spa pass, only did a port-day special massage, which included the rainforest room on a ladies-only night.

Thanks, even though we have been DVC members since 2003 I am realising I know very little about DCL. We have cruised only once before with Cunard, and I am certainly hoping for a more laid back and friendly experience, and of course that little bit of Disney magic without the crowds. And you are right with the help of my new Dis family we will get so much more enjoyment from our cruise. We are hoping to join the FE and i would like to do a ladies event, but must post 10 messages before I can PM

Never cruised Cunard, but have looked at its site. One big difference I noticed is that on DCL everyone from steerage to penthouse (not official terms) have the same dining rooms and menus. There is no differentiation other than that the 3 most expensive categories (on the Magic & Wonder) can order from the restaurants and eat in their cabins. No special bars or areas closed off on the Magic & Wonder (different on the Dream where Concierge rooms have their own lounge and deck area).

Also, except for Palo, you will not be kept out of the dining room based on failing to meet the dress of the day - ie, formal night is not enforced. Palo may send you back to your room if you are wearing jeans.

hi everyone! nice to see we all made it over to the new thread - who was it who said it'd likely be the end of the week before we made it here?!! :rotfl:

why is it that when you're in the house on you own, you end up hearing wierd noises and panicking?! or is that just me? gary's up north on business, so its just me and the dog for the next few days. i've only just got home from work about 20 minutes ago, and started hearing this wierd buzzing humming noise. kinda like the sound UFOs make in movies. went upstairs and back down, couldnt figure out where on earth it was coming from. luckily its stopped now because i was really getting wound up trying to figure out what it was. plus i think its just human nature to be more concerned about these things when you're in on your own!

Will be there myself Tues-Wed before our cruise.

I'll be there on Monday! :woohoo: This will be my first time in Europe and there was no way I was going to be that close to DLP and not go there for at least one day :cool1: Based on that fact alone, I'll be in Paris from Sept. 3 - Sept. 8, then off to Barcelona until the cruise. I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself. :jumping1:

Thanks AuntLynne! We've been to both WDW and DL and they each have their pros and cons. One of the things I'm wondering is if DLP has something "special" about it? For example, I was fascinated by the submarine ride at DL that isn't at WDW. We also like the Autopia and the nearness of everthing at DL vs WDW. In other words, is there anything that would make us feel like "Hey I missed that" if we didn't do DLP...or is it a case of "same park, different continent"?

Karen

I think everyone on the front page that has volunteered to head up an event, keeping track of hotels/room assignments, weekly updates, organizing excursions, etc needs to be commended on an excellent job!:worship: I know I appreciate all the important information being put on the front page so I don't have to go searching all over creation for the it!!! :thumbsup2 Thanks again for your hard work!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:JOB WELL DONE!:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Just wanted to add my thanks too :thumbsup2 Really looking forward to meeting you all in September and enjoying chatting with you in the meantime.:banana:

If you like the more condensed size of DL, then you should like DLP.

I enjoyed the entrance to the park, which is through the DLP hotel. Wish I had the extra grand per night to splurge on lodging (and still not wince at the price).

I'm going to look at photos and see if anything stands out. Will get back with this.

What's really neat is the proximity to the train line - we rode the Eurostar from London directly to DLP - that added to the experience.

I'm thinking that Andrew and I just may do DLP...particularly since I've got some extra DVC points and I just found out that I can use them at the Sequoia Lodge :thumbsup2!

Yes, it's not as educational as touring in Barcelona, but I'm less likely to want to bite his head off for asking for the millionth time, "how much longer is this tour." Maybe I can even convince him to sneak off for an afternoon to at least see the Eiffel Tower (I've heard it's about 50 minutes by train). The other bonus is that it gets him to his 3rd Disney park (doubt we'll make it to Tokyo, DisneySea or Hong Kong though).

Now, I just need to change my flights (booked through FF miles) and then figure out the best way to get from Paris to Barcelona (Iberia Air comes up cheap on Expedia). Anyone from Europe with good flight ideas, please do chime in. I've ready about EasyJet, but don't know what that is.

Welcome on board, Margaret!! :welcome:

Lots of tips and recommendations can be found through the Disboard forums with the added bonus of meeting new people through this thread.:woohoo::woohoo:

I find that I enjoy planning and researching our vacations just as much as actually taking them!!! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

We had length of cruise Rainforest passes on our 7 night Western Caribbean cruise. Really enjoyed the ability to just wander in and use the steam rooms and tile loungers at any time we wanted. It did tend to be a bit more crowded on the sea days though. With so many options of activities while on board ship and of course the ports of call to visit, somedays we had to make an effort to fit in a visit to the Rainforest.:rotfl:

Still we found it a relaxing experience and will be looking into the length of cruise pass again for this trip. Hopefully they won’t be too expensive:scared1:

If you're interested in a length of cruise Rainforest pass, make sure you take a tour of the spa on the day of boarding. The CM will explain the facilities and the cost of the various pass options (day vs length of cruise). There was no hard sell.

As Aunt Lynne said, it is easy to use the showers at the spa. I used them most days after my workout. There are 2 showers, each with a different showerhead. You are able to use the lockers at no cost, even if just using the fitness equipment. They were easy to use:) They have a built-in lock mechanism and you choose your own combination.

Yeah! for DLP. I took my SIL Judy to DL in Jan 2010 (we were in California, on the way to Hawaii, so of course DL) - her first visit at age 51. Two months later, March 2010, we accompanied my DB on a conference at Colorado Springs Resort, so we did WDW on her 52nd birthday. When I told them I needed translator(s) for France to utilize a Marriott timeshare swap to the property near DLP, and she said "we're going to DLP, too, right?" So we did one day at DLP & WDW Studios (combined) in October 2010 - you can see by the photos it was cold.

The train ride is easy. I'm sure there's some form of shuttle from the Sequoia Lodge to the park, then walk over to the train (hmm...100 meters). You'll buy your ticket in line as you don't have a European credit card with the computer chip, right? No problem - transaction can be handled in English or by holding up fingers.

When using US credit cards in Europe, they would point at the card I was supposed to use and I would say American and demonstrate they needed to swipe the card for me on their machine. Never had anyone wonder what I meant. (They have advanced security features in Europe, utilizing a "chip and pin" system - why are we so far behind?)

In one day, we met my DB's coworker for lunch at a large department store, dining under a lovely cupola:

Okay, I'm not from Europe and I've taken up so much of this page with photos, but here goes:

I'm booked on EasyJet from Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to Barcelona (BCN), having paid an extra 12 euros for one piece of checked luggage (20 kg) - bill is 51.49 euros ($76.83 charged to my debit card). Leave CDG 11:10 am, arrive BCN 12:55 pm.

[If you prepay for your baggage, it's 1/2 price - I may have to add another piece after I've packed]

I'll catch a TGV train for $25-42 (depending on how early I can get up) for a 10-12 minute ride from the DLP (Marne La Vallee) station. There are cheaper ways to get to the airport, but this is so easy (we were on the TGV to Brussels, which stopped at CDG to let off passengers).

Biggest Tip for Visiting Paris:

Book your time for the Eiffel Tower online and skip the 1 hour + wait to buy tickets. (Learn from my mistake)

Peggy- thanks for the advice about the website/ app… that will definitely come in handy!

Karen- that’s so funny that you decided to go to DLP

James and I have been researching Barcelona and really weren’t thrilled with anything to do there besides eating. We found a couple things that sounded neat but weren’t really excited about it. So yesterday DH decided to take another full week off of work so we can go to Disneyland Paris!!! :yay::yay::yay: I’m so excited I can’t wait. That’s really funny that Karen asked about it today. Maybe we can all do a meet there before Barcelona. We’re going to stay at DLP from 9/5-9/9. Hopefully that isn’t overkill for a smaller park but we move slower with DD. It’s not like our park commando days any more. Now I’ve got to get busy though planning a whole other segment of our trip…and the cruise part isn’t even totally planned yet! :scared1:

Hi Lynne,

What day are you flying to Barcelona? We're looking at a Friday mid-day flight as I don't want to fly day of departure. I'm thinking a brief visit to Eiffel Tower and maybe Notre Dame on Tuesday after we arrive, then Wednesday/Thursday at DLP then fly Friday see Sagrada that afternoon and then flop in bed!

Yes, cramming in way too much, in all likelihood but who knows.

Lauren,

Where do you all live in WV? We lived in Charleston in the late 80s/ early 90s and have fond memories of the Regatta and other fun things.

We'd be up for a meet. I need to change flights tomorrow and book our hotel. I'm lovin the DVC points!

I'm doing
Tuesday, Sep 6
London LHR - CDG arrive 11:20 am - TGV train to DLP (12 minutes)
DLP parks in afternoon

Wed, Sep 7
DLP parks all day (both parks both days)

Thur, Sep 8
CDG - BCN Easyjet 11:10 - 12:55
Hilton Diagonal Mar
sightseeing
Thursday night - Magic Fountains?

Friday, Sep 9
Touring Barcelona or Montserrat (monastery in the mountains)
DIS meet at Hard Rock Cafe

(This is after arriving in London the previous Wednesday and spending the weekend in Bath)

Last year, we had the one day in port at the end of our EBTA but I was hobbling around on a bum knee, so we just did the hop on / hop off (mostly on) bus and got an overview of the city.

This year, I would like to do some of the stuff that my niece wasn't interested in: early works of Picasso museum (he was a really good painter), inside of Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and the meringue house by Gaudi. Wouldn't mind seeing the old- fashioned amusement park on a hill overlooking the city. Lots more to see than the time I've got. Guess I'll be doing another cruise out of Barcelona one day.

:surfweb:
Three days and you guys are up to a new thread. I'll be reading.......thanks for all the boys birthday wishes. It was a good party weekend. Just four (4) more days in the working world then :dance3::dance3:
