Separating queen bed into twins?

We had our beds split on our cruise and it made a tremendous difference in the room space as well. With the beds together (there was only 3 of us in the room and we were a Cat 11) and it felt like you had to squish between the end of the bed and couch to get to the side of the bed. I like having them separated because we could get in and out of our luggage that we had stored under the bed much easier.

We have a king bed that is actually 2 twin longs put together, so I was wondering about the "twins" from a queen. If it's a true queen together, then the twin beds will definitely be a bit smaller.

I stand corrected on the bed dimensions! Thanks for setting me straight.

On our cruise in October our family had a 11 and 9 yo and I thought they would enjoy the 2 twins so there mother asked the room steward. He told her that the beds cannot be seperated. It must just be something they don't like to do because it takes extra time for them. I am very disappointed now that I have seen actual pictures of the beds and I will request the twins again next April. Hopefully they can accomidate us then.

And it seemed ( ) that the beds were separating a little bit each night. It really wasn't comfortable at all.

I didn't feel it at all the first two cruises so I'm wondering if our room steward even put the pad on the bed last trip. I never thought to ask him & it would make sense that he didn't since we were without soaps, shampoos, etc. throughout the entire cruise. Had to ask for everything & usually never got it - for both our rooms. Thankfully I brought a lot of my own supplies.

Must say, this is not the norm for DCL - our first two trips the room stewards were fantastic & attentive.

When the beds are together I thought I heard that they are supposed to be attached somehow--a strap or a hook or something--so they don't separate. We knew where the seam was, but it was not a problem on DCL but it was on RCCL.

On our last cruise we had the Girls' Cabin and the Guys' Cabin (both Category 11's) so all wanted the single beds. I made the request ahead of time through DVC and it was honored, but there was only one night stand between the beds, and one against the wall on the couch side so getting in and out was hard for both beds. Working together we moved the one nightstand from the wall to the middle and the bed over to the wall. It worked great except for the times when one of us hit the light switch........ :rotfl2: And, now that I think about it, we had no bedspreads, but we did not notice or care.

If a room steward is not keeping the supplies in the cabin or not willing to change the room to accommodate the guests, I would call housekeeping and inform them (nicely) and the tip would not be more than the recommended amount. If the attitude was poor, there might be a slight decrease in the amount. They work for tips. Tips keep their families going back home. But if they get a dollar or two less than they expect, they will THINK about their performance more than if they get no tip at all---that will only make them mad.

I also requested that our beds be seperated out before hand. I also asked that one bed be pushed up against the bathroom wall. So it went wall, bed, nightstand, bed, nightstand, couch. It was just as I requested when we got in our room.

But on my first cruise, I could also feel the split between the two beds. I ended up sleeping on one side of the split or the other.

OK, I'll ask the dumb follow-up question, which DH & I have been wondering about... If the queen is actually two beds put together can you feel the "seam" down the middle? Is it comfortable anyway?

Carla

Oh yes you can feel the seam!! Three cruises and all three we felt that big lump in the center of the bed where they joined them. It bugged me so much that I had to have them seperate them the last cruise.

Thanks for the photo! I was on the Oct 19 cruise 3 day and could not figure out a good way to keep my grand daughter in the bed. she is two and i worried about her falling out. the bed against the couch arm would have been great. Next time I will request this.

Thanks for letting us know you can call ahead about the beds. I'm going to try that and hope they will accommodate us. This way we don't have to ask our room steward to do something he might not be happy about. I don't want to start our cruise off on the wrong foot.

Room stewards are there to be asked to do things. It's their job. The cruise will only get off on the wrong foot if they give me attitude! :teeth:

I understand that the stewards can also provide bedrails for the littles, if they might roll out of bed.

I have been on three Disney cruises with my Mom and my niece as travelmates. On the first cruise we asked to have the bed split into two twins and it was done cheerfully.

On the 2nd cruise we asked again and the room steward told us it couldn't be done. I asked if they had gotten new beds since it was done the previous year? He looked away and said okay. When we came back from dinner it was split - no bedspreads. We left a note asking for ice each day and never got any ice either. I don't think he liked us!

The next cruise I emailed the TA about requesting twins. When we got there no twins. I again asked the room steward and she told me they did not recommend it since it limited the walking space. I said we would live with the limited space, we wanted twins. She split the beds AND we had spreads. We also requested ice and she brought it twice each day. We tipped her extra!

What bothers me the most is that it seems to be about what works best for them, not what works best for the customer! I did not lower the tip for the room steward who lied to me, but if it happened again I would do so along with a note explaining why.

That is a GOOD IDEA. I wish I had thought of that. We lowered the tip on our assistant server and head waiter one year because the former never refilled our water glasses but was sure quick to top off our wine and we specifically had told her we were water drinkers. We would see her polishing glasses during dinner but not taking care of her tables. The Head Waiter promised the special low carb cheesecake (that I provided the recipe for) for dessert--tomorrow. Every night it would be there tomorrow. Finally I got the Restaurant Manager involved and he got another option for us that last night as there was no time to make the other. We took a couple dollars from the beverage server and the Head Waiter and gave them to the Restaurant Manager. He said he was not supposed to be tipped. I said we wanted to thank him for doing the job for us. The Head Waiter never came to our table that last night--we think he thought there would be no tip at all. When I took the tip for the RM I asked him to give the envelope to the HW. He called the guy over and you should have seen the look on his face as he walked toward us--like a small child expecting to be reprimanded. When we handed him the envelope and our friend handed him their envelope, the look on his face defied description. I think the RM told him why our envelope was a bit short--but a note would have been a good idea. THANKS!
