When I was a little girl, I used to spend the day in the pool in our backyard. My mother taught me how to swim. She spent forever teaching me how to float on my back! Once I got the hang of floating on my back, I loved it. LOL!
But once I learned how to swim, housework, meals, sewing etc. called my mom away from the pool. She would never swim with me, but that gave me the opportunity to pretend I was a mermaid, or make a whirlpool etc.
At lunch time my mom would call me over to the back door. She'd hand me a little brown paper bag with my lunch in it. It was usually half a sandwich wrapped in wax paper and a plum, or a peach or an apple. I'd take my picnic lunch and walk over to the picnic table with my dog and eat my lunch in the sun, kicking my legs under the table, thinking I was all grown up.
In the afternoons my mom would often dig through the "junk drawer" to find me a dime for a fancy ice cream or a nickel for a Dixie Cup from the Good Humor man. She'd either call me wildly, "Maggie! Hurry! Here he comes!" or she'd sit on the curb with me and we'd play "footsie" until he drove around the block.
I'm 46 now, and it wasn't until about 3 years ago that my mother told me she is terrified of water and has no idea how to swim, that's why she never swam with me. She faced her fears long enough to make sure I knew how to swim and float so I would always be safe around water.
