Sensory Integration Dysfunction

My oldest son goes absolutely WILD when he comes into contact with leather. Which didn't bode well at his psychiatrists office with a leather coach. He would slide, spin, turn every which way just to have the feel of it all over him. He does the same thing with a leather like coat I have (will just rub his hands all over it and his face when he touches it).

This made me smile. I just had an image of DD12 with her now favourite blanket. On our last trip, she got sick from the Wave. A few days later when we were at MK waiting for those pesky late fairies to arrive, DH was talking with a CM about it. She felt so bad for DD that she told her to go pick out anything in the store for herself. Well, after looking through books and drawing stuff (2 things she's very into but it seems the weren't the right ones), we were getting frustrated and almost left without getting her anything (she really didn't want any kind of dolls or clothes). Well, I saw a few blankets on a far wall so we went to check them out. The feel was JUST RIGHT for her and it didn't hurt that it's her favourite colour. She quickly grabbed it and hugged it tightly and spent the rest of the day holding it close and rubbing it all over face over and over again. We've got lots of pictures with it, including with the fairies. Since then, if we're at home then she's got it wrapped around her and she sleeps with it every night. Not only is it just the perfect texture for her tactile needs, but it's a great Disney memory as well.

That is sweet about the blanket. My son has a favorite blankie and it goes with us on any overnight trips. It's funny because he has many very soft blankets and he likes a simple fleece one my mother made him. My step daughters tactile issues are the opposite. She has issues with textures of clothing and the biggest thing is that she can't handle having her face touched. We took her to the mall to get a facial for her birthday last year. She really wanted to go and get made up and all. My husband and I were not even thinking of her disability because we so rarely have a need to touch her face on a daily basis. She kept wincing the entire time and looked like she was in excruciating pain. We kept offering to stop but she wanted to keep going.
It is amazing how different kids can be with the same diagnosis.

My son was like that with his ears until he was about 7 years old. We believe that whole issue actually stemmed from constant ear infections and pain in the ears as a baby that his body just didn't want to get over. It also fed the whole hair washing, face in water, hair cutting thing.

To date his really big one is when wearing a jacket with a hood and leaving it up at inappropriate times. Sometimes I think he does this to block out noise, but it is something that over time gets better and better for him.
