I knew that was coming.

Apparently they are more concerned with the "rich" keeping more of their money than low income earners making more money.

:sad2:

It was voted down because the REPUBLICANS tacked on an amendment to do away with the Federal Estate tax. If the bill had been just the minimum wage increase it would have passed. I believe the Republican poison pill killed the legislation.

So, like I said, the Dems were more interested in the government taking money from the rich than allowing the working poor to get an increase in pay.

Sure, they picked their poison but who got the dose?

And this is the SECOND time in a few months that the Dems voted against a minimum wage increase. The other time it was a different part of the bill they didn't like. I think it had something to do with military budgeting.

The deficit is large enough and the rich can afford to pay the tax.

Really?

Maybe instead of penalizing someone for being successful, we should be holding our elected officials accountable with the money they already take from us.

Give them more and they'll spend more.

Because the Democrats have an ounce of fiscal responsibility. They understand that the massive proposed tax cut would lead to massive borrowing, even more debt, even more interest that all of us would have to pay.

Either you understand that, or you don't. And if you understand it, why on earth are you in favor of something that rings up massive amount of debt that you are going to have to help pay off?

Let's start with Dubya. :thumbsup2

You honestly think they'd spend less if the estate tax was lifted? :rotfl2:
They spent up a budget surplus and much, much more...that is what deficit spending is...money we don't have.

No big deal-the media will play on this and make the Republicans look even worse since they tacked on the junk estate tax decrease.

It will pass in 07 when the Dems take Congress this fall. The Republicans should have left the bill as it was intended as they infuriated the millions of voters who would have gained income with this bill. I also like Hillary's idea of tying the minimum wage to Congressional raises or cost of living.

Remember-tens of millions of poor voters have more power than the few thousand this estate reduction would have benefitted.

If the Dems upset the minimum wagers, where else where their votes come from?

The amendment did not do away with the estate tax. It would have amended the amount on which taxes would have been exempt, from the current 2 million in 2006 to a cap of 5 million by 2015. As it stands now, the tax will rise until 2009, then in 2010 there will be NO estate tax, and beginning in 2011, the rate will revert back to pre-2006?(not sure about this year) rates.

Moral of the story - if you have a big estate, and the law doesn't change, die in 2010!!

So what you're saying is the minimum wage earners would be (are?) more upset with Republicans for trying to cut the taxes of the rich than the Dems voting down a bill that would help them?

Sounds like both the Dems and the minimum wage earners got their priorities out of whack if that's true.

I don't know how many times someone has to say it before you get it! If the Republicans had left the bill alone, it would have passed. Your trying to spin this so the Dems come out as the villians is interesting, but par for the course. It's that kind of nonsense that is finally going to loose the Repubs the House this year.

Oh, I get it. But please, tell me one more time? Pretty please!!

If the two bills were separate, the Estate tax bill wouldn't have passed.

So now, no one gets anything they want. Just more political infighting. Honestly, I'm really sick of it.

Boo hoo. And who's fault is it for lumping them together? The minimum wage would have passed. So now, you say, no one gets anything. That's exactly right! Blame your own party.

Really? If you think it would have passed on it's own, this means the Republicans are really for it. That's how it should be "spun". But the word is that the Republicans knew the Estate Tax bill wouldn't pass so they had no worries about the minimum wage bill being passed.

What up with that??????? He!! must be freezing over.

The republicans are once again holding the working poor hostage to their rich cronies. Why anyone would vote republican is beyond me.
