oh crap.

Just got our itinerary for the trip DH's division won. We are going to be spending a weekend at the Hotel Del Coronado. I love that hotel and am grateful for the opportunity to stay there.

I just found out though that one of the evenings the dress requirement is semi formal. So all I can picture is a bunch of middle aged ladies dressed in prom gowns :rotfl2:

Help! Define "Semi Formal" in an adult setting. Seriously, I dont do dressed up unless I have to. I like to look nice, dont get me wrong, but I dont have very many occassions that I need to be fancy for LOL.

Fall on that old standby, the little black dress. IMO, a nice cocktail dress, shoes, bag, you're set. Bonus is, it's probably something you'll find opportunities to wear many times in the future.

Cocktail dress- knee length not long. Nicer than a 'church dress' but not a prom gown.

I wouldn't wear a prom gown type of dress unless the invite said "black tie"

If I were given instruction to dress semi formal, and it's not a cruise (where no one seems to know what semi formal means  ) then I would wear a cocktail dress. it doesn't have to be anything over the top. Just elegant without going overboard. I have two cocktail dresses in my closet for those occassions. Lemme see if i can find pix of them for you......

ok here's one:

Both of those are beautiful thank you for the example!

Funny you say that about Church dress, I was just talking about that with a friend the other day. We are so casual at our church even our pastor wears khakis and a button down or a polo. I love that, actually I never thought I would.

Semi formal is a nice dress, but not a ball gown or other formal attire. Think evening wedding of friends' kids with sit down dinner style. A simple black dress will always work. Men can wear suits or sport coats, no tuxes...but khaki's and a polo might be a bit too laid back.

Who knew so much thought went into semi-formal attire! Sounds like a fun weekend, hope you enjoy it! :)

When people are told an occasion requires semi-formal attire, they may not know exactly what this means.

For women, semi-formal attire is somewhat flexible. Women can wear a dress, pant suit or dress suit. Preferred fabrics for semi-formal attire for women include silk, velvet, rayon, cashmere, high quality polyester brocades, or velour. Usually, anything silky goes. Except for cashmere, a wool business suit is not considered semi-formal attire since it is not dressy enough.

Hem lengths in semi-formal attire dresses vary. Dresses can be cocktail dresses, no more than an inch above the knee, or they can extend to the ankle. Dress suits, for example, a silk suit, usually has a hem length slightly above, at or below the knee. Pants suits, again in silk, polyester, or cashmere, tend to be worn at the ankle. One can also wear dressy tops and tuxedo pants made out of appropriate fabrics and still fit into the semi-formal attire group.

Generally semi-formal attire also means dress heels for women, usually in colors coordinating with one’s outfit. However, a dressy flat or strappy sandal with the appropriate outfit is also considered semi-formal attire. Low, comfy flipflops are not dressy enough to be called semi-formal attire.

ok so I ordered 2 of these last week with the deal at graveyard Mall. Hopefully they will be here in time it looks like I should be able to make this work.
