Has anyone been successful in doing this? I have an engagement ring (.60 karat diamond) and a diamond wedding band (.25 karat) that I would like to sell but I don't know how to go about it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have thought Ebay but there are so many on there already I can't imagine that I would get any hits. I wonder if I should go to a jeweler to get it appraised first?

I would appreciate any ideas or personal stories. I am really not interested in selling it for the gold - that just wouldn't be even close to its worth. Thanks!

I sent mine in with some other gold that I wanted to sell to USGB. They had originally told me they would take the diamonds out and send them back, then they offered me $56 for all of it!! I told them to just mail it all back! I'll do something different.

I have a nice engagement ring from a previous marriage and I've tried Ebay, Craigslist, etc. with no luck. The only responses I got were pretty obviously scammers. I really would like to get rid of the ring as well as have the extra money, but diamonds actually aren't rare or even all that valuable, sad to say. Most of the value is in the emotion in which it was given. *sigh*

I took it to a pawn shop and they pretty much told me that exact thing, and told me to try Craigslist.

That's what I was afraid of ... I think I might go and talk to a jeweler for advice. I'll let you know if I find out anything good.

I would at least try ebay, unless a jeweler gives you some great price. I was quoted $80 for my engagement ring, just a plain setting, .33 stone, and my friend put it up on ebay, $600.

So I put another up, with a light blue stone and tiny diamond, kind of antique looking, $45 quote, $450 on ebay.

My friend is really good at writing up descriptions. She tries to make them interesting or funny....like for my engagement ring it was something like, she kicked him to the curb, now she's raising money for new curb appeal on her house. Help my friend get a nice landscaping! I don't know if that keeps them on the page long enough to get interested seriously, but it is fun to read :)

ETA: This was last year though. Not sure if the economy now will play a part in harder to sell...

Until you wrote that, I forgot that I asked a jeweler, that dealt in buying as well as selling. He wasn't the least bit interested. Jewelers would never pay the appraised value or even slightly lower. I think the appraisal that came with my ring is complete BS. It just adds to the hype when they're trying to make a sale.

Now that I know what a scam diamonds are, I would never ever want one. If I want sparkly stuff, I'll happily take CZ. My current (and last) wedding ring is just a plain band made of tungsten carbide - it's a shiny, kind of grayish silver that will never scratch or bend out of shape. It's the same stuff drill bits are made of! :rotfl: I love it, and I also love that it was a fair value.

But please, let me know what you find out!

I investigated cash for gold dot com, and followed the link for fine jewelry to an affiliate website, and in the fine print it said they only paid wholesale value. I also looked at another website, called brokenengagement dot com I think, and they did not mention wholesale prices, but I haven't delved any deeper. Yet!

Hope it works out for you. And me, too!

I'm still searching. I went to a little jewelry store that a friend referred me to with a plan...

I happen to have a ring that was squished (an amethyst ring my parents gave me for my graduation many years ago) and a broken gold necklace. I started by asking if they would repair these pieces. The answer was yes. THEN I asked if they would buy my other jewelry (3 rings)... but no. He suggested a couple of pawn-type shops/junk stores. I didn't follow through with that since this particular pawn shop was in a very small touristy town and it is very off season for this touristy town.

So I plan to do a little more research and talking to another jewelry store or two in a bigger area and I will report back. But at least I will have my amethyst ring repaired after being sad about its depressed smooshed shape after all these years for a very reasonable price ($20 or so) :)
