How much should I ask?

They are 16 years old. I believe we paid about $800 for the set back then. The washer is in working order. The dryer is in "mostly" working order. It is a gas dryer and for some reason it won't heat. Rather than try and fix it, we decided to get a new set.

Anyway, these units are still useful so I'm sure someone can use them. Someone with the know how may be able to fix the dryer.

How much do you think I should ask for these? What's a fair price?

Honestly, I'd advertise a washer for sale for whatever you could get for it, and put that you will give the buyer a free matching dryer that needs work. I don't know what you should ask, but my gut says not much more than $125 or $150, probably. And that might be too high given the age of the appliances. :confused3

16 years old? I'd say free for pick up.

I agree too--especially since the dryer doesn't work.

And yet, "free" seems to imply "junk" and it will take forever to unload.

Now $25 for the set? That's the deal of the century!!

Yes I agree.

Funny story - Someone we know put his washing machine and dryer to the curb with a sign that said - working condition free to take. It sat there for a week. He later put a sign on each that said $25.00 and they disappeared!

But seriously scrap metal is up right now so they are likely worth more that way.

Nothing that I put out in front of my house with a Free sign lasts more than an hour. :confused3

Not on Freecycle. I'm amazed at how quickly people reply after posting an item.

To try to sell, I wouldn't expect to get anything more that $50 for both.

Come to my neighborhood... Forget "free for pickup"... the metal garbage pickers in MY neighborhood would give you money for it!

Is it possible you could take it to a metal recycle place?

Too true!

OP, I'd say post to CL or someplace free for $100 OBO or something like that and see if you get a nibble. If nothing, then a sign at the curb.

I know we purchased a house with 20+ YO appliances and we felt they were worth something - AND they lasted another 10 years. LOL! Our new ones...not as reliable. So if it doesn't cost you anything and you have the space to store them, give it a whirl asking $ for them.

Also, I checked CL before posting, and you should SEE the prices for washers around here - and some of the are reeeealy sketchy looking.

If I were desperate for a washing machine, I would pay $50 - if it was in perfect working order.. I would not be interested in a non-working dryer at all..
So - try $25 to $50 - and if you don't get any bites, go for "free"..:)

Timely post. We just sold our washer and dryer through Craigslist yesterday. The house we are moving to has a brand new washer and dryer all installed.

Within ten minutes of listing the set, we were getting calls. The first person that called was here within an hour and bought them. We took the listing off Craigslist soon after, and I called the list of numbers I had taken to tell others that the set was sold.

The washer and dryer (both Maytag) were about eight years old, looked nice, and worked perfectly. We listed the set for $150. and sold them for that.
