Sell or Rent??

My husband and I are thinking about selling our timeshare with Disney due to me losing my job this coming February and having a baby in about a month.

Was wondering if anyone can give any feedback on how the rentals have been working and if people have been real successful at renting out their points?

I am looking at both options, but not sure how successful the rental process is and people booking trips.

You will have 50 or 60 replies to any post about renting points The worst part is figuring out who is serious about your points and who are the curiosity-seekers who are just nosy. You will need to be on your computer for several hours for several days at a time, and when you do rent your points, keep good records of who rented, email address, $$ pts rented for, deposit, home address, and when the final payment is due. Sorry about the job loss and congrats on the baby

Thanks Cruelladeville on your feedback. Sounds like people are interested in buying points and renting through this process. I will look into it further and appreciate the guidance on the need for good record keeping. No worries on the job loss (with having a new baby, I am excited to potentially go into the teaching world rather than staying in the Corporate world!) and thanks for the congrats on the baby! She should be coming soon..only a few more weeks!

Well, do you foresee yourself going back to Disney regularly at anytime in the next few years or so? If you do believe that you will be going back regularly, keep it & rent out the points. I've had excellent luck at it, but do be sure to keep good records... For the most part everyone that's contacted me for point rental has been serious....

Good luck with the baby, you'll be surprised how quickly she will grow!!

Sorry to hear about your job loss. I have found the rental process quite easy. I wanted to take the disney cruise but did not want to use the necessary points. In about 1 week, I rented out 358 points. The main thing is respond to everyone. The first person who contacted me wanted 12 points. By the time we were through, he had bought 308 points. I hope this may help.

Thanks everyone for your comments. One other question, do you normally put a contract in place with the person renting or do you just keep good record keeping? Is there a guide to use with helping to rent out points?

Thanks again. Sorry..just a little new at this and want to do some research before my husband and I make a decision on renting or selling. Sounds like renting is a great idea if in fact we plan on going to Disney in the near future or use the points for future travel which we do once the baby gets a little older!

Hi Keri,

I don't have a signed document per se... In my emails, I describe how I expect payment, and that they, as the rentee are responsible for any room expenses/personal expenses they encur... I also indicate my cancellation & refund policy as well... I save all emails to & from as well... I haven't had any problems, knock on wood of course!!

2) To make sure you cover the fees, just rent low.
3) If you rent at $6-$7 per point, people will come in droves.
4) If you rent $10, you might have few in tough times.

5) if you rent low, to cover expenses, you can keep the DVC.
6) When the child gets older you will probably want to use it.

I agree, unless you need the cash right now, then sell.

I wouldn't start out low, if it gets close to your use year,lower your price

True, but it's the same amount of work.

I don't think it is a problem renting points, it is a little bit of work though. But you do meet a lot of nice people.

That is true , but you do have a large investment and you at least should try to recoup some of it.

Absolutly agree on this one.

Another thought, if you do rent for $10.00 per point. Put this money in a seperate account. Maybe in a couple of years you can have enough cash set aside for a nice trip home. When you child gets older and you decide you wished you had kept your points, they will be a lot more expensive than now.
