Selfie Stick bans

Glad they banned them on the rides - also glad I didn't buy one
However I'm not sure how you can completely ban them from the park - there are so many things one could get hit or run into with.

Oh no, a wandering balloon ran into me! (just joking, i know those won't hurt but I seriously know some people who would probably get just as mad if they were hit with a balloon)

They are a private company that has every right to limit use of any outside item as they see fit.

This will be enforced just like no flash photography on dark rides and no line cutting is "enforced".

While flash photography is annoying, it's not dangerous like selfie sticks are.

Of course they can. That doesn't mean I can't complain about it. If we weren't allowed to complain about things that Disney has every right to do here, these boards would move awfully slowly, wouldn't they? (i.e. FP+, anyone?)

As the mother of a 14 year old, I think I can answer this for you.

Oh, if it's kids that young, can the blame really be placed ENTIRELY on them?? It's the parents who usually buy them this stuff and who decide what to allow. If no one is teaching them to be considerate in the parks, there's a pretty good chance they won't be.

Banning them on rides is an awesome first step. I wish they'd ban them during shows and parades, but it's probably just too hard to police.

Actually a show is considered an attraction and maybe so is the parade so the ban may cover that, too. Anyone there this week might be able to fill us in?

What age group is the "selfie generation"?? As a 24 year old college student who was brought up with computers and cell phones as well, I've just never seen people my age "taking selfies willy nilly" or not interacting with other people. So that's just a really strange phenomenon you seem to be witnessing.

In all honesty, the problem I've had with it is losing my 54 year old mother countless times in public because I look around and she's 10 feet behind me staring at her phone and nearly running into people...lol.

As a volunteer with the youth group at our church, I can say that the selfie generation is from about 13-21. All of these kids have been taking/posting selfies for several years. It was with this group that I first started hearing the word "selfie" and, since working with them that I have seen adults start to take selfies (including older people...because they know what they are).

Can we blame the kids for the problem? Sure. Why not? Parents teach their kids many things..that doesn't mean they listen. In this modern era in which most kids spend their day in school and then daycare/sports or whatever the parents have little influence on them. Don't blame the parents, blame the system. I'm glad I live somewhere inexpensive where my single income pays for our needs and my wife can care for the kids instead of putting them in day care all day.

Well if the worst thing they're doing is taking pictures of themselves, it sounds like they haven't turned out too bad. Sounds like your youth group is doing pretty well.

My main point is, I do think parents can at least influence how respectful kids are of their surroundings. Because I can't imagine that ever flying when I was 14. I grew up with 2 working parents and still managed to listen to mine. Until a few months ago I was a working single (the single part is no longer true ) mother and my child is better behaved than most kids? Sure, kids spend a LOT of time at school and daycare but parents who make an effort to be involved can be, easily.

Are those sticks collapsible? What does somebody do with one on a ride?

yea they usually collapse to about 12-14" i think. Maybe some don't get that small.

I got a selfie stick for christmas from my husband. We are not the type to take selfies, but are planning a 3 week trip through europe this summer and wanted a way to take pictures with our gopro without handing the camera off to strangers. I'm generally trusting of people, but it's an expensive camera, and even people you can trust seem to have no idea how to take a photo without a view finder or screen. I have yet to use it, but by the time we get there, I'm sure it will be banned everywhere.
That being said, I agree they should not be allowed on any moving rides, or even non-moving attractions.

I was just about to post that I'm allergic to latex when I read your post!! Getting hit with a balloon could KILL ME!!! Keep them AWAY and BAN THEM from the PARK!!! lol Just kidding. But that really is what some folks would be like and are about the sticks. Not pointing out anyone on here of course or suggesting that the ride ban is bad (anything for safety is ok in my book). I just don't like "my generation" to be called out when trust me there are annoying things that every generation did and we shouldn't let the negatives depict an entire generation or group!!

EDIT: Then I went back and read the link on latex allergies! Mine is not nearly that bad and I should thank my lucky stars!! It's almost like a peanut allergy for some people, just being around it could give them a reaction. Wow!! Thank you to the poster of the link for that info!! It's something people wouldn't think of--I didn't and I have an allergy.

We purchased a GoPro to take to Disney in August and also a bunch of mounts. When I pulled the selfie stick out, my first thought was it wasn't too bad. Until my 7-year-old daughter says, "oh mom, you have to open it up." And she proceeds to expand it and I was shocked. First, because it really showed my age and second, how did my 7-year old know that.

There is no way I would use that thing anywhere. The mount I like is the one that is for the pool and underwater specifically and it has a wrist strap that I can wrap around my wrist.


This is the one I plan on using. I am not taking it on rides and will not hold it above my head to film anything. That is just rude.
