It was Tuesday, a day like any other Disney day. We got to Epcot with minutes to spare for our tour.
We met our CMs at customer service by SE and they led us to a classroom near Innoventions. We watched a video and picked our equipment to prepare us for our tour. Everything was about to change. One by one they led us to our Segway HT where we waited for instructions from our CM to turn it on, Grab the Handle, Look our CM in the eye and step up on the platform. At first it was a little disorienting for most but only for a few seconds and the as we relaxed everything became calm. Almost instinctively we began to move about, slowly at first and then more and more quickly up to the speeds we normally walk at. Smiles were the most obvious thing as I looked about the room. We learn to turn in place, Guide our HTs over obstacles, Weave in and out of cones placed like a slalom and proceed up and down a ramp the length of the room.
Soon we were off to the World Showcase. Following our CM guide through the various countries' little paths and alleys. When we arrived at Italy we were given the opportunity to do some free riding. The CMs offered to take our pictures and everyone handed over their cameras and posed by the Lake with SE in the background. Soon it was time to go and we all followed our guide in a return to the starting point near Ice Station Cool. Our time had gone faster than the HTs ability to speed. We thanked our CMs and headed off to meet our family members and tell them how much fun we had.
Next morning DW and I went to Celebration and bought our own Segway HTs. Another 2 hours of owner training in and around Celebration put even bigger smiles on our faces. We then returned to OKW with our new gliders and plugged them in for their first charge overnight. Next morning we brought them outside and started teaching our DS and DD how to ride and more smiles were created immediately. After an hour or so DW and I grabbed our HTs back and headed off on our first non-guided ride.
We explored the trail from OKW to SS and DTD. People everywhere were waving to us or following us to ask about our Segway HTs. Unfortunately the batteries do need to be recharged so back to the room and plug them in again. Next day we repeated our Ride to SS and explore more of the trails around the canals. The DVC ferry would have to slow down so everyone could wave and take pictures. Once again the batteries were in need of a charge so another trip back to the room for a charge.
Our time at WDW came to an end much too quickly but we look forward to future exploration of the trails in FW and around the Epcot resorts next time. By the way, did I mention that these HTs are fun?
:smooth: :cool1:

I have to agree the Segway HT is a lot of fun! DH and I tried them at Epcot on July 24.

Just wondering what your plans are for using them at home?

Are there any community restrictions around the country? Or do you think they would be more like bikes than motorcycles?

Ohhhh! I'm soooo jealous. My DDad ha an EPCOT CM with one cornered in our Feb. trip. I can't wait to do the EPCOT tour. But, you can really just buy them?!!! How cool would that be?! I was just telling my DH that we need Segways instead of our bikes for going to fireworks in teh next town. Could you tell my DH how yo get one in time for my birhtday next week?! LOL

Snowgod- how did you get it home?

I can't wait to try them in November. :D

They can be disassembled for transport and take up no more space than the wheel size. 83lbs weight for the i670 model we purchased. Check out segway.com for dealers.:smooth:

We did the Segway tour in May when we were at Member Homecoming, and you're right.....it's a blast! We were saying it would be neat if, once you had completed the training, you could rent Segways, like you can the watersport equipment. One CM said he had heard about the place in Celebration, but due to time constraints we didn't pursue it. Do you know if you can rent there, or just buy the Segways? Have fun with your new toys!

Nancy :earsgirl:

You can take a tour in Celebration but I do not think you can rent them to use on your own. The Segway web site lists a number of places to rent or try HTs. :smooth:

How cool! So, how did it feel to be a WDW "attraction"? ;)

Can you just see everyone gliding around the parks someday?

The best thing about a segway is how comfortable people seem to feel as you ride next to them. :smooth:

Oh dear, I already feel like a moving target for the ECV's -- don't tell me I need to start dodging Segways as well! (All in good fun.) ;)

Did the Segway tour in March and loved it!

But I would personally NOT like to see Segways allowed in the parks for guests. Those things can go up to 12 mph. Can you imagine the problems? It would be like allowing bicycles, or skateboards, or inline skates. As it is - the CMs can only use I think it's the 7mph key. Or maybe even just the 5mph key. With guests - it would be uncontrollable.

Top Speed of the keys is 6, 9 & 12.5 mph. Please do not confuse misinformation with the ability of the Segway HT to work in such a space. I get run into on every trip by strollers and ECVs. HTs were designed to be safe in places that people can walk so should be better than currently allowed devices.

I was planning on calling WDW tomorrow to schedule one for our December trip! I can hardly wait! Are you using it a lot at home?

DW rode 3 miles to town today so she could run errands and meet some people. She always gets a great reaction. Last weekend we took our HTs to a company picnic. We helped a whole bunch of people try them for a few minutes each. They all had a great time but we ran out of time for everyone that wanted to ride. DW and I have both used them at work as part of presentations. It's a great way to get peoples attention.:smooth:

We did the tour in May and loved it! I agree though that I wouldn't want to see them all over the parks. I have enough trouble getting through all the strollers and ECV's.

I do think it would be cool if you could rent one like from Wilderness Lodge over to Ft. Wilderness or from OKW to Downtown Disney.

Is there a way to lock it up? For example, if you were to ride it to the local store?

Yes, there are numerous locking options. You should check out segway.com for more information on accesories.:smooth:
