How secure have people found the cabins from theft? Does Housekeeping stay in the room or lock the door if they step out? I'm concerned about having a laptop PC that would be too big to put in the safe.

We cruised the July 27th Magic and had no problem leaving our laptop out. We also had our digital camera and I even left some fine jewelry in the wine glasses that were in the cabin when we arrived. You shouldn't have any problem with your laptop, but you could always "hide" it in the top of the closet behind the life jackets if it would ease your mind. JMHO, but I truly think you don't have to worry! :D

I've gone to the stateroom a couple of times while it was being cleaned to get things, and the room steward is always there while the room is being cleaned. They do prop the door open, however, but their cart and vacuum is usually in front of the door, so it would be difficult to get in without being noticed.

But as ZooMommy said, if you are concerned, you could put the laptop in the closet. Or under the bed.

we had 3 laptops with us....
we put them on the top shelf of the closet...
but i don't think anyone would bother them.....
we travel all over the world with those laptops and so far no one's touched them....
of course we do have everything imporatant backed up, with the backup kept in a separate place.....just in case.......(so if worse came to worse, we could buy a new computer and put all the backed-up info into it)

Thanks everyone for your answers to my question.

There is a safe in the room to lock your small valuables. I travled with a laptop, portable dvd, palm pilot, 2 digital cameras, digital video camera and both of us girls had all our good jewels. We had no problems.

We also had no problems, but I must say I was disturbed one day when I went back to our room to get a fresh camera battery, and our room steward was cleaning away... in the room next door! Our door was still propped open, as if she was going back and forth cleaning them both at the same time. So. I walked in, looked around, exchanged batteries and walked out. All told I was there 3 minutes. Had I been a stranger, I could have walked in, taken what was in plain view and walked out in the same amount of time... unseen.
So that bugged me a liitle, but again, nothing ever happened and I did have quite a bit of camera equipment lying around. All of the jewlery and money was in the safe, which I consider to be very secure.

Just use the safe for whatever will fit in there (They are much larger than the standard size safes in most WDW resort rooms), tuck away the laptop somewhere where it couldn't be grabbed in a matter of seconds, and you should have no worries!

How do you lock the safe? Can more than one person in our group have access?

Anyone who travels with a laptop (and if you have a laptop, of course you travel with it) should make the investment in a security cable for it. It's kind of like a bike-chain for your laptop. All laptops come with a little hole that these cables attach to. Loop the cable around something stationary and your laptop should be reasonably secure. Of course, the best lock or alarm will not deter your most determined thief, but this system eliminates those who would prey on the crime of opportunity. The safest place to lock it up is to the drain pipe of your bathroom sink.

Security cables can be purchased for about $50 at your local office supply store.

Only one KTTW card can be used to open and close the safe. So if for example you had that card and wanted someone else in your party to be able to open the safe, you'd just swap cards. (The safes are opened and closed electronically by scanning the card)
