Is the security process at emarkation similar to that at the airport? Do they have the same type x-ray machines and walk through devices?

Yes, it is a very similar check to that at an airport, with both luggage screeners and walk through detectors.

There are also bomb-sniffing dogs around the terminal and with the luggage. Be sure to tell any kids that these are working dogs, not dogs to be petted. :)

Keep your film in mind...Repeated exposure to even the low radiation X Ray machines can damage the film. If you are going through a couple at the airport - round trip - and then at the port there might be some damage. I would think about having them hand check it, that is what I am going to do in November....:D

Just FYI:

If you happen to carry a small manicure set in your purse or carry-on bag, take it out! I didn't think anything of it until the screener at the port asked if I had a knife in my purse! I said "Well NO!" Then he asked about a metal nail file and I remembered it was there. I took the set out to give it to him but he must've thought I was too blonde to know how to use it for anything other than it's intended use so he said "It's okay mam. Have a nice cruise" as he snickered and shook his head!

Thank goodness we drove to Florida. If we'd have flown I would have been in real trouble.

Just a word of advice.

That is interesting about the knife....there are plenty of sharp knives on board if you wanted one.... Why would they care if you brought your own? I wouldn't, but why would they care?

We saw folks who were going on scuba dive trips and DCL kept their dive knives. DCL returned their knives to them after they were off of the ship, and then "confiscated" them before they were allowed back on board.

They do check you with the metal detectors and x-ray machines before you are allowed into the terminal. This change sure makes the embarkation process go much faster - a very good change.

Regarding film. The TSA says your film is good for 7 trips through the x-ray machine (at least I think it's 7). For most trips this is "ok" (ok not really ok) but at the airports we have had duffel bags rescaned many times. And if our film was in there, guess what, it goes bad. Ask for a hand check of your film at all airports. I never have seen a bag go through an x-ray machine multiple times at the DCL terminal.

Remember that you will go through x-ray each time you re-board the ship at each port. You have to tally up the number of times you re-board and add that to airport x-ray exposures. I had difficulty when requesting hand inspection of my film and loaded camera when re-boarding at the ports.

Interestingly I had my folded cane in my bag and the screener questioned it on the x-ray. My husband pulled it out and showed that it was a cane and it was fine. It looked like a gun on x-ray. I wasn't using it because I was in a wheelchair at the time.
I was was patted down by a very nice security guard since I was in the wheelchair and have metal in my leg as well.
Also when we got our luggage my 12 pack of diet rite had been opened to verify it was cans of soda and not something else. They were ina sealed carton.
