I have seen kids and adults try and pull the sword (behind the castle) - to no avail...and then all of a sudden some little kid is able to pull it half way out? Is there a CM controlling that? or do you have to stand a certain way? What's the trick?

Thanks - Elyse

I've watched the show with Merlin & yes it's controlled. They pick a few people from the crowd and they have a couple people try and can't and then finally and always a kid - gets to pull the sword out. It's pretty cute.

The show with Merlin is no longer performed at WDW. Now it's basically up to the whims of the CMs if and when the sword can be raised. :)

the trick is you must have been born destined to become the temporary ruler of the kingdom.

or have a friend with a device that looks like a garage door opener.

Secret? Trick?

"You must be pure of heart and noble of intention.."

And remember..

Whoso Pulleth Out This Sword of this Stone and Anvil, is Rightwise (temporary) King!

I'm sad the Merlin show is no longer being done. In 2000, my then 4 year old son was able to pull the sword out of the stone and was dubed Temporary Ruler of the Realm. It was so fun, and something he will always remember.

I am sure it was stopped because someone sued over some form of personal rights breach, probably right under the section: "If my kid can't do it than no one should!" ;)

They did. And they still continue to perform it at DL, where it's still hugely popular with kids.

It was a hit even us "Roy-sized" Mouseketeer "kids!"

I want to know where the "control" is. Is it in some remote location? Or is there a CM standing around ready to push a button? Is the button or lever on the stone, or near by? I'd be interested in trying to find it! :wizard:

It's something that if you don't know is simply more magical not to know, you know?

Fantasyland CMs know where the control is. Pulling the sword out is now a magical moment.

not if you "follow the rules", as of last weekend, there were stanchions with belts surrounding it. Technically, you couldn't even get a photo, it was blocked off.

Try as he might, he couldn't remove the sword from the stone.

It is a realy shame that they stopped doing this show. I would love to know the actual reason.
