Second resort and different use year

Hello- I am hoping some of you can help me to fully understand exactly what it would be like if I buy an OKW contract with a different use year than the BLT one I have now. So many people have recommended that I stick with a Feb use year to keep it simple but since we are going the route of resale, I am seeing very desirable contracts with different use years. Thanks so much!!!

When you have two use years, the major downside is that the system won't combine the points automatically from the two contracts for 7-month bookings. To get around that, you can either always book using solely one contract or the other (banking and borrowing so you can use the other contract for the next booking), or you can book one reservation with one contract and then a continuing reservation with the other contract, or you can transfer points from one contract to the other.

If you transfer, the transferred points won't show up online and can't be used to make an online booking; you have to call in to use them. Generally you'd only do the transfer when you actually are ready to book, so probably you'd make one call to do the transfer and book.

Members are technically limited to one transfer per use year, but many people have said that MS will often waive the rules when you're transferring between your own contracts in order to make a booking. Some CMs won't do it, and some will. So that could be a hassle if you were counting on doing a second transfer in order to book something and then they decide to get strict about the transfer rules.

On the other hand, each separate use year gets you two more waitlists.

There are folks who manage multiple use years just fine, and there are folks who have had multiple use years and found it really annoying. You know yourself the best - if dealing with all of this stuff sounds awful, then wait longer for the perfect February contract to come up. If it seems like something you'd have no trouble with, then get another one.

February is a reasonably common use year, so listings should be coming up regularly. Make sure you're checking all the reputable resellers and get your name on all of their mailing lists.

DVC Magic Resales has a couple of listings for a Feb use year at OKW. I have no personal dealings with them, but apparently it was started by an agent who used to work for Fidelity. Might be worth looking at.

If you have two different use years, you need to view it as if you were in fact two separate and distinct members. Each use year has its own banking deadline that you need to follow and dues for each will be billed to you separately each year and, if on automatic withdrawal from your banking account, you will have two separate withdrawals of dues per month. However, as long as the persons named in the deeds are the same, you will see both accounts on the same pages of your on-line member account.

In making a reservation using both contracts (at 7 months out when the resorts are different), you cannot mix the points from the two contracts to reserve any one night. Instead, you have reserve some nights under one use year and then the remaining nights under the other and then ask MS to link the reservations. That will also mean you will have two different dates exactly 7 months out to make a combined reservation, and you cannot use on-line check for the combined reservation. Also, though linking the reservations assures not having to change rooms for any trip using both use years, you will likely be required to do a mini check out and check in on the switch-over day, closing out one account, opening a new one, reapplying your credit card to the new account and getting new room keys (and a new parking pass if you have a car).

Alternatively, you can transfer points from one use year to the other and use the points together at 7 months out by combining them. Though there is a one transfer per use year rule, that is not usually enforced when the owner is the same on both use years.

If that is your intent on how to use them then I agree it shouldn't be much, if any, issue. The 2 banking deadlines will probably be the main issue.

All it takes is missing one banking deadline for you to think twice about 2 UY's.

With 2 you have double the work, double the mailings from DVC, 2 member accounts and cards, and 2 banking deadlines.

There is a reason that others have warned against it. Can you manage both, sure, do others manage both, yes, do I own 2 UY's yes, and I only have one contract left to sell in the second UY.

I wanted the 50 BWV points so badly, but decided not to take on the hassle of two UY's, once I received the ammended contract.

I got back my initial down payment today. I may have to get on the Disney Direct waiting list for my UY.

I would only consider different use years if I planned to use the contracts separately.

For example, one contract at BWV for a fall stay for F&W and one contract at OKW for a spring stay. I might go once a year, but use banking and borrowing to use each contract every other year. I don't much care for split stays, but that use would also work for two different use years.

If I needed to use points from both contracts for one stay, I would be frustrated when it came time to book. Transferred points would not allow me to book online, so I would have to wait an extra hour to call MS. Sometimes, that would mean I wouldn't' get what I wanted - waitlists can be stressful. I do not like checking our and back in again, either, while linking is better than changing rooms, it's not a perfect solution.

Keeping track of two banking deadlines would not be a problem.

Automatic if the UY is the same, title is the same, and they don't make a mistake which has happened to us.

We currently have three different Use Years at two different resorts and have had as many as four different Use Years - all without ever losing any points due to banking deadlines or for any other reason.

Yes, with multiple memberships there is a little more diligence required, but with the accounting offered on the member's website the deadlines are very easy to track and maintain.

Our experience has been that MS does allow multiple transfers each year between our memberships. We have usually just reserved as many days as we could from one membership and the rest from another contract but MS has always allowed us to transfer points between two memberships even if we had already made a transfer from the same contracts to another member.

For those considering multiple Use Years, and thus multiple Membership numbers, we have used a simple checking program (Quickbooks) and free programs like Caskbill's DVC Tracker to easily maintain our accounts - in conjunction with the member site to verify everything.

If you purchase a resale with a different Use Year than your current membership, make certain that you title it the same as the original contract and also that you inform Member Accounting that you are purchasing a resale contract and would like it to appear on your Member login. They will often catch that and add the resale to your current login, but not always. It is always best to be proactive when dealing with MS as it is very difficult (and/or expensive) to make changes after-the-fact.

If you find a good resale opportunity, I would never avoid it just because it has a different Use Year than you already own. Multiple Use Years can also add a lot more flexibility to your DVC planning.

I bought Hilton Head points resale a few years back - when they were pretty cheap! I was surprised they passed ROFR. These were bought when there were no restrictions so these are primarily my "cruise" bucket! I have used them for HHI and resort stays at Disney also. I think if the situation were different I'd prefer the same use year.

It's all in the availability, numbers and getting the best price possible. If you can cruise or use your points for something outside of DVC stays, when you want, where you want at a price better than paying cash then it makes sense to do so.

Many owners assume that if Disney is offering the ability to use their points somewhere other that DVC stays, it must be a good deal, that is not usually the case.

Also, the reason they aren't a good deal (therefore this shouldn't really influence the decision to buy resale) has nothing to do with what you paid for the points...it's based on what they are *worth*. You can easily rent DVC points for $11-$12/point. There are reputable services that will do this for you with little effort. So, if you take the points for a cruise * $11 this is *always* greater than the cash cost for the same cruise -- therefore you would be better off renting the points and paying for the cruise out of pocket. Granted, you have to use the majority of your points yourself per the purchase agreement, so if you cruise every year, it wouldn't be feasible to rent all of them every year (only half of them at most).

Quick question -- since now DVC website uses Disney Account, how does it work if you have multiple DVC memberships (UYs)? Do you see all of them when you sign into dvc.disney.go.com with your single Disney Account? When you book do you have to choose one membership, then can only select points within that? I understand the restrictions stated here, just curious how that actually works when making reservations on the website. Thanks!

Another issue to consider is that cruises are not always available for DVC points. Prior to the 3rd and 4th ships, DVC had black out periods for cruses, once I believe for a full season.

Now that Disney is having trouble filling the cabins, they have opened up reservations on points. Should availability get tight again, we will see more black out periods.
