I am second guessing the "big" gift for our boys 11 and will be 14 at X-mas. From Santa I have heard ;) they are getting a printer for their computer. We were going to give them cash $$$ :wizard: but I have been thinking, have any of you given your children a digatel camera before going to WDW? :hourglass How old were they?, about how much did you spend on the camera? Did they treat well? Would you do it again? :confused3
Last time they had regular film cameras and went through them rather quickly. :earseek: Many pictures were too far away, blurry... did you get them for a B-day or Christmas gift? Or just because for the trip? :3dglasses TIA

we bought DD a digital camera for christmas last year. She was 8. She has treated it well and has not lost or damaged it. I bought the extended warranty because I thought it would be worth it in case she dropped it or something. I also bought her a memory card to be able to take alot of pictures so that we are not constantly downloading. It was $100 with a $25. rebate. I got it at the 4 am door buster day after thanksgiving sale. It was worth getting up for! It is a kodak easy share which also works on your own dock if you want to upgrade. She quickly learned how to dump the poor quality pix and I do not have to pay for shots that are 2 miles away and blurry anymore!!

Wow! $100.00! :wizard: That is give or take a few dollars my limit for their big gift. Did not think about the day after Thanksgiving sales :3dglasses , thanks for the idea! I was thinking it would be more like $200.00 each and that is too much. Of course will have to talk to DH about it but I know they will get $$ from Grandparents and Aunts/Uncles so they can buy what they want with that $$. I just may be onto something :goodvibes

I personally have dropped and broken 2 digital cameras...so I would say no...stick with the printer... you can always get film developed on to disks and your kids can print them that way.

My DD (15) just bought her own digital camera over the summer using $$ from her part time job.

My other DD (13) and I went to Disney in August for a soccer tournament and she took the camera with her. She did a great job taking care of the camera and the pictures she took were great. It is so nice to delete the bad ones (and to know right away they are bad and re-take them).

She carried the camera is a small camera bag the she wore over her shoulder. I made her carry it though and I believe she wore it on every ride except RNRC and Space Mountain (then I held it for her).

She now wants her own camera for our upcoming trip in December for Xmas. But she also wants an iPod. She will get one or the other for Xmas and the the other for her birthday in March - she just has to decide. I too am hoping for a good deal on Black Friday!!

I never used to get the extended warranty thing. Now I do all the time if it is reasonable. I used it on a $35. dvd player ($20 for the extended) and it has been fully replaced with a better model. Did it for $35 for my digital camera--a more expensive one than my daughters! and when I dropped it this summer I had no problem. They replaced it immediately with the newer, better version. I used to think it was a scam really, but with kids and the craziness of life, when I can afford it, I do it!

That is exactly what we are doing.

Our DD will be turning 13 while at WDW this Oct. We will give her a digital camera a week before we go as an early gift so she has time to learn some about it before we go.

We just got our DD who is 6 y/o, her own digital for our upcoming Disney trip. It is a kodak Easyshare and cost around $250. We also got the docking station but I forgot how much we paid for that. She learned very quickly and loves it. The Easyshare really is a breeze to use.

I'd definitly get it for them, I would not get top of the line though, and get one that is not large.

I have a digital elph I bought a couple years ago, my son took it over as his own pretty quick. He puts it in the pocket of his jeans and takes it to the mall, the football games, vacations, he's even taken it to school. He has taken thousands of pictures and lil video clips and has a ton of great memories. The biggest card I had was 64 mb which amazingly holds lots of pictures, lots and the quality is great, not great if you were going to blow them up poster size but for 4x6 prints or as he uses it for mostly, computer use, its perfect.

The camera has held up great all this time, we just recently wore out our original 64 mb card. What we have ran through were card readers. I've bought 4 of them in the 2 and a half years we have had this camera at about 25-30$ each. BTW, he was 13 when I got the camera and just recently turned 16.

CVS sells a one-time use digital camera for $20. If you're hesitant to entrust a younger child with an expensive digital camera, this might be a better atlernative. The camera has a screen to preview your images and you can delete the bad shots. You could wrap it as a separate gift or use it as a stocking stuffer. Even though my DS has a digital camera, this is a great idea for field trips or when there's the possiblity that he might lose his good camera.
