SD vs SDHC

Are all memory cards switching to SDHC? I don't think either of my cameras can use the SDHC cards as the logo doesn't appear on the boxes or the manuals. Every SD card on sale for BF was SDHC. I'd love to get a deal on some cards for Christmas. I have a Canon powershot SD850 and a Nikon D40X.

Both will take SDHC.

HC = High Capacity. 1 to 2 gb cards are SD. 4gb and up are SDHC. Make sure your camera and card readers are SDHC compatible or they will not work.

Is there a way to find out if they are? I'd hate to buy 2 and be stuck with cards I can't use. I read that the D40X is, but I talked to our local camera store and they said to use the SD only.

Try looking in the owners manual.

I just googled and the sd850 and nikon d40x can use the SDHC card. So just make sure your card reader can read SDHC cards or you will have to down load with the camera.

You can't always believe the owner's manual - some cameras (like my first DSLR) came along before SDHC was common but later firmware updates allowed the use of SDHC cards. Make sure your camera has the latest firmware, and whether or not it will take SD or SDHC is often mentioned in the firmware release notes. If you talked to someone who said not to use them in your D40X, he was probably thinking of the D50, which can't use SDHC.

If your card reader doesn't take SDHC, you can often get one that will for $2-3 shipped at Meritline or DealExtreme.
