I just returned from the Scotland Trip and I have one word for it.... Phenomenal!!! It by far exceeds all of the ABD trips I have taken, even adding my two trips to the ER into the equation. There were many surprises on the trip and it will take me a while to process it all. The guides were Hanneke and Dusty and they set the bar for guides, I have never had a bad guide or even a so so guide but they were the best, both very enthusiastic about the trip and Scotland on a whole, they were just amazing and they both wore traditional Scottish outfits to the farewell dinner, a very nice thoughtful final touch. In fact the guides and this itinerary reaffirmed why I love the ABD product, so much so that I am canceling my Alaska Cruise and booking the newly tweaked ABD Viva Italia in its place, the lure of the afterhours trip to the Vatican appeals to me.

The rest of this post is responding to various posts on other threads and are my opinion regarding this trip and ABD trips in general.

I am at a loss to understand why people on this board and on the internet in general posted bad reviews of the trip. It seems that even though itinerary is readily available on the ABD website, and the fact this trip was never billed nor advertised as anything but "A Brave Adventure", people started reading, watching and assuming and when the trip didn't include things they wanted the trip received negative reviews, sending some people with trips later in the season into a tizzy. It wasn't "A Braveheart Adventure" or "A Brave Outlander Adventure" it was simply "A Brave Adventure" and it lived up to the itinerary which was released with the trip.

As for the long days on the bus, this being a much more active trip with more activities than on other trips I have taken, and some very early mornings, the quiet time on the bus was great, we could relax, nap and regroup. If the guides had been on the microphone I think I would have not only voted them off the island, I would have thrown them off the island!

2 Disney Guides vs. 1 Disney Guide and 1 native to the country, I have experienced both and I would much rather have 2 Disney guides because they get Disney, the service, the customer satisfaction and the attention to detail. They have enough local guides that there isn't a need to ensure one guide is "native" to the locale.

This is group travel and ABD has to balance the trips so they appeal to everyone and I do believe they have achieved that.

I'm glad you had a wonderful time on the trip!

If you read the input from some of those who went on the early Scotland trips, we tried to give balanced input for future travelers to have the right expectations and manage their pre/post days accordingly. I don't think anyone ever said the trip was bad, but that ABD should have added additional historical elements (that is not an unreasonable expectation, even if it is a "Brave" themed trip). Please remember - some input from the early trips has been taken and therefore the trip has had some tweaks accordingly.

If these boards are only for posting super positive comments about ABD, then what's the point? I'm on here to get honest feedback because I really look to these boards to help me plan future trips (like Norway which I hope to take in 2015).

You're right, paddles. I stand by my previous comments about the trip. We gave our opinions based on the trip we took, when they obviously were working out the kinks. I also thought honest feedback was expected on this board. We never said the trip was terrible.

Thanks, Tozzie! This is really good to hear. :thumbsup2 I thought it sounded like a phenomenal itinerary, and therefore signed up for it, but I have to admit, some of the earlier reports had me questioning my perceptions. I'm glad to know that ABD have obviously gotten it right, even if that may have involved incorporating the suggestions of the earlier trips. (The trips are always evolving. There's a big difference sometimes between what works in training trips vs. what works in actual trips with paying customers!)

I know you've taken a lot of ABD's, so your opinions about this itinerary give me a renewed enthusiasm for it. Thanks! :thumbsup2

Looking forward to your Trip Report!

I definitely appreciate the feedback. From my experience ABD is really the best of the best that Disney has to offer, but there's always room for improvement. As a niche product, I'm sure Disney/ABD reads these boards, and if suggestions or criticisms help make that product better, then ABD will continue to grow and get even better.

BTW, how was the food? That's been my one bone to pick with ABD.

They definitely *do* read these boards! :)

If you want a foodie trip, go to Greece! The food on that trip was fabulous!

(And I'm interested to know about the food on the Scotland trip, too!)

The food was better than on any of my other ABD trips, in fact there was only one meal that I didn't care for, nothing bad just not my liking.
Cool! I like hearing that, too. If I've got it correctly, besides Scotland, you've done Backstage Magic, Alpine Magic and Ireland. Any I've missed?

And wait a sec. "ER"??? What happened???

The food was great! Lunch at the natl museun in Edinburgh was so-so, but everywhere else was fantasic. Loved the Mustard Seed! Oh, yes, the Balmoral breakfasts were fabulous! Almost as good as the Kempinski in Munich for those who have taken the Germany ABD.

Ah, the Kempinski breakfast!!! I miss those mimosas and waffles with Dark chocolate sauce!!

Good to hear Scotland's food was good. Didn't love the group meals in Paris except lunch at Versailles.

I have to agree with the posters who say that Disney does adjust their trips to improve. Since our trips to Alaska and Montana I notice that ABD has changed both the itinery and hotels (both for the better IMO). Glad to hear you had a fabulous trip.:)

So glad to hear your experience was like ours (we were on the August 2013 trip). I felt exactly the same way. The trip was awesome, and I think will be hard to top (my previous ABD was Ireland, and it was great, too, but Scotland was pretty special :) ) I agree about the bus rides, too--I wanted to gel and absorb.

Ditto from me. I thought the food was great overall. My problem with the Nat'l Museum meal was that there wasn't enough! We were pretty hungry, and it was more like afternoon tea.

Hope they don't offer Haggis!! We are looking forward to this trip...was Dusty the "toner time" Dusty who appears briefly in some of the ABD videos? (He was our guide in China--really top notch).

They do offer Haggis, but there are other choices, one of the Hotels had Vegetarian Haggis at breakfast. Yes, Dusty is the toner time Dusty, He was great.

Oh, good! I want to try a real Haggis! :) I have to ask, what does "toner time Dusty" mean? :confused3

Haggis tasted like liverwurst to me, so if you like that, you might like haggis. Can't help you about the "Dusty" remark.

Definitely agree with this assessment.

We actually really liked the Haggis we tasted on the trip. I recommend the Haggis appetizer at the Mustard Seed.

DD loved the haggis at the hotel in Inverness. She kept going back for more! I thought it was fine, kind of a blast from the past from the liverwurst I ate as a kid on Long Island. Without giving away too much, I enjoyed the presentation of the haggis at the hotel.

Also, I love the photo under your name!
