We are really excited about the Sci-Fi Dine In Restaurant- it looks so cool!!!! - but have 2 big concerns:

1) are the movies scary? (kids will be DD 4 and DS 6)
2) what happens if it rains?

Thanks!!!!

Don't worry about the rain! It's all indoors. It's made to look and feel like you're outside at night, but you're inside a building.

The movies are more cheesy than scary, and most of the clips are in black & white. I think your kids will be fine. :)

1) Not scary, just 50's & 60's campy movie and TV clips.

2) You are indoors, so no worries about the weather.

It's a pretty neat experience. You really do get the feeling that you are at a drive-in.

Love Sci-Fi!!! I don't think the movie clips are scary for little kids, but of course every kid is different- it didn't scare mine (3, 4, and 6 years old when we first went). If you are unsure, just search "disney hollywood studios sci-fi movie clips" in youtube :thumbsup2

1. Depends on the child. I'd imagine some of it may freak out kiddos, especially considering it's already dark. There are videos of it on YouTube, but here's the complete listing of what shows in one loop (you'll see it at least once, maybe twice):

2. It's indoors, so weather won't matter in the slightest.

The movie clips may frighten very sensitive or fearful children, but that might be it.

The young children in our party were not scared of the clips but they were a bit fearful of the dark. It is a dark restaurant - just an FYI

Let me share my experience with Sci-Fi:

My 5 year old had a huge fear of going to the movies (especially hilarious because my husband is manager of a movie theater) - it started right after he turned 3 and he refused to go see another movie. It took us months to get him back in the actual lobby or in DH's office (he eventually warmed up to that and loved going to Daddy's Work as long as he didn't have to go in a theater while a movie was running - bad experience while watching the Squeakquel movie - we think that he thought Dave got hurt and had to go to the hospital in our actual theater and he never wanted to go back).

This went on for two years and we never pushed him - he would just stay at a grandparent's house when we took older DS to movies. Not a big deal (but will be a funny story to tell when he starts working there as a teenager!).

Anyway, fast-forward two years and we are in HS with our family and my in-laws - DH tells me he wants to try this Sci-Fi restaurant. We have no ADR, but my father-in-law is the luckiest man in the world (not kidding) and walks right up and gets us a table with no wait - I don't know how he manages things like this.

I wasn't that knowledgable about a lot of restaurants - we were skipping the TS places to eat since this was a spur of the minute trip, so we'd been eating various Quick Service meals. I had never heard of Sci-Fi, but I'm game for anything. We walk in, I see the darkened room and theater screen and immediately start worrying that DS5 will not eat there or will be terrified by the clips. And of course - what happens: we sit down and order, keeping an eye on little DS the whole time - and he is fascinated. Barely takes his eyes off the screen to eat! In fact, when I told him it was time for a bathroom break (he was a late potty-trainer and mandatory bathroom breaks after every meal were necessary at this stage) he got so disappointed and wanted to stay to watch the rest of the clips!

Long story short - he loved it, never had a problem, and the clips that I might've thought would scare him (I believe there was some kind of swamp creature in one of them) didn't phase him at all.

Ironically, we got back home and he still refused to see movies at Daddy's work!

My kids were and still are afraid of the movie clips at SciFi :scared1:. After reading these boards, it seems like the vast majority are ok though.

When my oldest was 7 we went there and his wide eyes were glued to the screen. He then asked the waiter if they would change the channel. :lmao: He did not beg to leave but told us he would never go back. We went back recently when he was 10. He gave us a hard time until he saw the clips and now laughs at himself for worrying about them :)

I don't beleive that any of these 1950's-60's B-Movies would scare any kid now days. We've taken all of our grandkids to the the Sci-Fi for meals and watched all of the movie trailers. Most of the time I could tell them what was going to happen next in the scene. Go and have a blast from the past sitting in a 57 Chevy or Cadie with a real cherry-coke!

I think it depends on the child. My 2 year old wouldn't care, but my 5 year old stepson probably would be freaked out by some of it, and my 3 year old stepson probably freaked by most of it. By the time they're teens, they certainly wouldn't be, but the younger kids probably aren't watching anything remotely as "scary" and certainly not anything scarier, so it may be frightening for some. Especially when you add in the dark, the noise, the lack of familiarity with surroundings, and the over-stimulation that comes with being at Disney and the possibility they did a ride earlier that may have made them uncomfortable and more sensitive than usual.

Kids are weird. I've often been surprised by my own children and what did or did not frighten them. So yeah, it wouldn't shock me to find out that a lot of kids get freaked out by the B-Movies inside the Sci-Fi Drive Inn.

But the vast majority will have no problem whatsoever. They are 100% old time B-movies, no gore, and a lot of hilarious costumes. I'm a huge horror buff, and I used to love these "classics" when I was a kid.

Enjoy. It is a really cool theme for a restaurant. Their onion rings are quite good.
