I'm an aimlessly browsing the DIS lol and decided that I was curious to know what you guys think of school uniforms. Do you have them?

We don't wear any kind of school uniforms but it has come into question one or two times. One side of the students said "Yeah! We want uniforms so that way we don't have to worry about the way we look and getting made fun of because of the way we look. We all look the same!" and "It is easier to get clothes ready for the next day and I really couldn't care less whether we wore them or not" and then the other side said, "I hate conformity! Let me be myself and be different from the rest!"

I know where I stand, but where do you guys stand on the topic of school uniforms? And if you already do wear them, what do you think of them?

we have to wear them at our school... actually i think just about every secondary school in the UK has to wear a uniform. I don't really like uniforms overall but ours are the worst. We all have to wear purple blazers so because of that, people can tell which school we go to from a mile off. Mainly because every other school wears a "normal" colour like blue or black so we're the odd ones out.

I don't wear clothes to be my own individual, I don't wear them to look like others. I just wear them, and yes I like my clothes.
But honestly, I couldn't care either way, if people don't like the way I dress, I don't bother with them.
I think school uniforms would be fun, depending on the design.

Okay I wore them for 5 years and have a developed opinion on them.

We had to wear: Tan Pants, or a Dark Blue Skirt. White polo or button down shirt, Dark blue shoes, our hair had to be up if it was long enough, and we had to only wear certain types of socks. Very strict.

I hated them. I consider myself pretty good at fashion, and I would have loved to wear normal clothes. Now I can wear whatever I want, even pj's (homeschool).

So I am against school uniforms.

My school doesn't have uniforms.I think if we did,it wouldn't work out anyway.

I dont have them this year but we have them next year. I dont like the plain skirts but I like the plaid ones. Next year, we get a red plaid pattern! :goodvibes

My nuns would have a fit if we were anything with a pattern.

And are skirts were so long, if you hiked them up you would get detention for like ever. Other than the uniforms though, I really loved that school :p

Here, we have no uniforms. I don't think it would make a huge difference either way, because everyone, with the exception of the goths, dresses in preppy clothes. (collared shirts, etc.) We already look very nice.
If there was to be a uniform system, I wouldn't mind so long as the clothing was okay. Magenta shirths and orange pants..I don't think so! Something like collared button down shirts would be fine though. Maybe as a tradeoff Fridays could be no-uniform days.

My school district doesn't have any rules about uniforms. However, we have regulations about what is appropriate, and what's not. Before I moved to the town where I live now, I attended a Catholic school. Our colors were burgundy, pink, and white. We had a small selection of different things to wear.

About school uniforms, I really don't care. I like that I have the freedom to wear what I want within a few regulations. But, if my district decided to make uniforms manditory, I'd be okay with it. Besides, I wouldn't be as self-concious as I am now.

we have uniforms

rules:

shoes only
ties must be worn
only 1 ring per person
1 pair of studs only in ears
trouser os skirts are black or navy
shirts are blue
hair must be natural colored(no red or blue or anything the one rule i hate)

to be honest our school would have a hell of a lot more bullying if it wasnt for uniform even if it does suck!

i dont agree with the hair rule tho

I wore uniforms at my first Elementary school for 4 years. I hate hate hated them. Rules were:

White, navy, or maroon polos/button downs.
Khaki or navy pants/skirts.

I hated all colors, and I had 7 of the same exact outfit. Button down white and a khaki skirt. And to tell the truth, there was still a LOT of 'My clothes are so much better' at the uniformed school. More actually.

My current school has no uniforms

I'm against uniforms.

we kind of have uniforms, but you can still be an individual unless there is a formal event.

during school we have to wear either a kaki skirt or pants (in the winter we can wear wool gray pants)
an oxford shirt(button down) that is, either yellow, green, blue, pink, white, or purple.but they have to be solid colors no stripes or designs on them.
and in the spring and fall we can wear polos with the same colors, and again no designs or stripes.
and we have to wear a navy blue blazer ALL the time!
and close toed shoes.

Our uniforms are pretty simple, and other schools around are stricter

Navy blue/hunter green/white shirt (fridays we can wear a spirit shirt)
Khaki/navy blue pants/shorts/skirts
Any kind of shoes (except slippers or flip flops)
One weird rule though is you have to have a white undershirt only
I think girls can only have up to three earings in one ear, boys can't have piercings
Hair can't be something like green or purple
No logos on your shirts
You can wear any type of zip up jacket, but it can't be zipped
Belt

I don't really care that we wear uniforms. I've been wearing them since (i think) 3rd or 4th grade, and I'm in 10th now so it's completely normal. It would feel very odd to go to school in my own clothes.

If you saw how I dress on a day to day basis, you would understand why I dislike uniforms.

Its all in the title. Uniform. Everyone looking the exact same. Its just not right, in my opinion. I don't even like wearing the same t shirt as someone, let alone the same outfit as everyone else every day.

I don't think people are uniform, so we shouldn't dress that way either. In a job, eh, I could deal with it, but I wouldn't be happy about it. I plan to work where I don't have to wear a uniform.

I like my individuality, thank you very much.

We don't have them.

They are good because you don't have people making fun of other people because of what they are wearing.

They are bood because they don't allow students to express themselves through their clothing.

I am for uniforms but when it comes down to it has to be an exact pair of pants, socks, shirt, etc. I am against it.

My school has a dress code.

No clothing can be see through.
Pants- (boys) Can't be excessively baggy. No writing. belts. no holes.
Skirts- (girls obviously) Below the knees. Slits are to the knee no higher.
Shirts - Girls: can't be TIGHT nor FORMFITTING. no tanks. if you have a sleeveless top, it must be at least two inches of material on your shoulder. no writing, especially not on the chest. Boys: collar shirts.
shoes- no crocs, after this year no potatoe shoes (birkies), no sandals. if the shoe resembles a sandal, it must have a heel.
hair - no blue, purple, green, etc. hair.
Guys: no mustaches, beards, goatees, sideburns can not be long, hair can not touch the collar.

that's my school's dress code.
allows individuality while keeping students looking neat.

oh, and when I was in middle school, they tried to change the dress code saying boys hair could only be so long. Some parent got pissed and told the school that legally, they couldn't do that. It was sex discrimination. If they said that boys couldn't have hair that is longer than X length, girls wouldn't be able to do it either.

The school backed off fast.

we dont have to wear uniforms at my school and boy im glad. .i dont think i could stand wearing them i like to look different and not fit into a crowd. if i had to wear a school uniform i think i'd go darn right crazy.

My school doesn't have uniforms. I think half the kids in my school would revolt if they tried to give them to us. They did rewrite our dress code last year, and it's a lot stricter now, but no where near as strict as some.

I don't think I'd mind a uniform that much, but not in school colors (Maroon and Gold). I dress pretty conservativly anyway, except with my shorts, that's really the only school dress code rule I don't obey, but if anyone ever nags me about it I can just say, "Oh nice, you're making fun of my freakisly long legs that clothing companys do not make shorts to fit while that kid over there is wearing the shortest micro mini on the blanet" My skirts are always with the dress code though.
