My daughter is starting a charter school this fall and will need polo shirts for her uniform. I bought some Izod from Pennys and Lands End shirts and thought I was all set - polo shirts are polo shirts. I found some at Kohl's today and grabbed a couple along with a uniform skort and had her try everything on. Wow, who knew there was such a difference!!!

With her frame (50% weight/75% height probably), the only one that fit well was the Kohl's/Arrow brand! The other 2 were either too long in the tail or too long in the sleeve and looked boyish! The Kohl's shirts are very feminine.

So, just a tip for those starting with uniforms based on my experience. They are on sale for $10.20 right now and there is a 15% off code floating around.

I had asked her a few months ago for input, thought I would share my experience.

You'll find they all fit differently, but they also all hold up differently as well. DS has been in uniforms his entire life, and the Lands End shirts wash and wear way better than the Izods. French Toast navy blue tends to fade too. Lands End has specific cut for girls shirts, you just have to make sure you look for it.

Back when my girls were in school uniforms (it was so easy!), I always went for the Lands End things. They lasted so well that they could be passed down to the younger sister, and they didn't look like rags. Also, since Sears sold them, I could save the receipts/tags and "trade them in" if they got a hole or something in them.

An equally good uniform tip: If you have a choice of colors, avoid white. Our girls could wear polos in white, red, or navy (or white dress shirts or turtlenecks with the red/white/blue jumper or skirt). The navy and red polos had a much longer lifespan than did the white shirts.

Make sure the ones from Kohl's meet the uniform guideline. Also, they usually do not have them out all the time, so buy double. They do not last as long.

I will share my experience. I always went to the uniform store that we have here, Flynn and Ohare. I spent at least $40.00 per shirt. I have her shirts from Freshman year and she graduated this year. The shirts from Kohl's and Penney's never lasted more than 6 months. I can't comment on Land's End as we couldn't get the fit correct, but I do love the rest of their clothes and since they have some clothes in Sears stores you could do a fit with the other shirts they have in stock.

Good luck, uniforms are a lifesaver!!

Another tip from a mom who has been doing uniforms for 14 years. If you think you might want some extra shorts/skort for spring in the next size up buy them now! They will be very hard to find after what is out now is gone except at he uniform store and those cost so much more.

If your school is just starting uniforms some of you might want to start an exchange. We just bring all our outgrown jumpers and skirts to the first home and school meeting, put them out on the table and everyone shops for what they need. If you buy the official Catholic School jumpers they will last for a long time!!! It takes a good 3 months before they are even soft enough to not stand on their own! :rotfl:

I have always been very satisfied with Lands End uniforms. They do cost a bit more than what some of the stores have, but I have yet to find a pair of blue boys uniform pants that hold up nearly as well. Flynn & O'hara is another big provider for uniforms, but since I have boys, I don't need to buy jumpers or skirts with the school plaid.

Our school does the uniform swap thing. We usually sell any piece for $1.00. Parents donate the uniforms, we sort, and lay them all out on tables by size. Others can purchase pieces as needed. By selling them, no one feels like they are a charity case and the school makes a few dollars too.

Oh, I could have told you that JC Penney's shirts are a boxy as they come and are not good for girls with a girlish figure. Unfortunately, my DD and her friends mostly wore Hollister and American Eagle polos. When I'd find them on the clearance shelves, I'd get as many as I could. Full price is around $34.99 now! :scared1: They do meet the strict standards though as they only have 3 buttons up the front.

DD is finally done with middle school so no more polos for her. Now it's DS's turn, but I think shopping for him will be easier as far as the polos go.

DD wanted to burn her polos when school got out for the summer, but I said no because they were too expensive. I guess I'll try putting them on Craig's List or ebay.

Wow, thanks for all the extra tips! This is "arrow" brand at Kohl's, hoping it lasts better than target/walmart.

I got her a couple of skorts at Kohl's but they are too big in the waist. I was going to return them but if the next size down fits well, I'll keep the bigger size for the spring. Never would have thought to do that! Hoping to find some adjustable waist skorts that aren't too pricey (have to be khaki material in either khaki or navy)

Thanks for the white vs red/blue color tip as well!

She is still in a kids size but we will transition to adult small soon I am sure - I'll have to shop for fit all over again lol

izods are horrible. I actually really like the Old Navy stuff you can order online for uniforms. take care!

I purchased one polo for my boyfriend online, when he goes golfing and it really is an amazing product with extremely high quality. These are great shirts! My boyfriend don’t have much golf cloth---he's worn the same style Levis for as long as I know him, because he's never swayed by trends or fancy marketing, his opinion is generally reliable. He loved the polo shirts for the first sight, and those shirts became his favorite shirts. They're sturdy, but soft; professional, but comfortable; and you can wear them with just about anything through three seasons. The seams don't unravel, the sleeves don't bind, and they're long enough to stay tucked in (if you want them to).It comes in a huge rainbow of colors and has held up very well after tons of washings. I have them in every color you can imagine. They go with everything and can be worn for almost every occasion. It's really light and airy, perfect for golfing in the heat, it’s long and can be tucked in and is probably the softest polo you will ever find. He absolutely loves it and I plan on buying more. The tag says machine washable, but since it's 100% cotton, I plan on drying cleaning or using Dryel for it. Don't waste your money on anything, although these are a little expensive they are a great buy, once you try it on, you will never buy a shirt again that isn't Ralph Lauren, and at last, I want to than topons--the online shop, I'll buy more polos on it.
