School Project On Cruise

We are leaving on Saturday and DD has of course, been assigned not one, but TWO major projects that are due the Wednesday we return.

I will be taking construction paper, glue, tape, markers, etc. etc...but my question is..will I be allowed to bring scissors on board? Maybe in the checked luggage..or if not...would GS have some they could let her use?????

So, I guess we'll be having "school" up on Deck 9...but what a place to have school, right??? lol

Any help would be appreciated...

Pack all your supplies (child's scissors, glue, tape, markers) in a clear , sturdy zipped bag and throw them in on top of one of your checked pieces of luggage. When they open it up to search they will see the bag right away and just close your suitcase back up. That is what we did and had no problems-scissors were still there when we unpacked. Worst case, if they come up "missing", I am sure guest services or the gift shop would have a pair your could borrow.

I would think that a small pair of scissors would be fine....

(I think the kids blunt kind.)

On our last cruise, this September I had brought a pair of them onboard and through airport security.

I didn't know I had them until I saw them in my purse onboard.

According to the TSA's website, blunt tip scissors are allowed on the plane. My DS brought his (in checked luggage so there wouldn't be any chance of a problem with TSA) and we had no trouble taking them onto the ship. I believe they were still in our checked luggage - but they didn't even search it since the cable-ties we use instead of locks were not cut.

Any chance you could "push" your DD to get the bulk of the projects done before your cruise? That way she won't have to work on them while you are one the cruise, and then no harm will come to the projects as they get transported back home!

Now my personal rant on "artsy fartsy" homework: WHAT IS THE POINT????? I just don't get it. Never did - never will. Unless the homework is for ART class. But it usually never is.

(I am taking a deep breath as I step off my soap box....)

We are driving to the Port so I don't have to worry about airports...it's just
the ship security, with the scissors.

I wish she could get them done before we leave. That would give her tonight and tomorrow night...don't think it's possible.

One, making a comic book, she will be working on in class, today through Friday, so she may get most of that one done. She might just have to color it or cut and paste it on the ship.

The other, there were like 7 to choose from and I asked for the easiest one..making a bracelet. If the teacher approves, we can get the "product" in Cozumel or GC and make it on the ship. I already have some stretchy stuff and ribbon, so all we need are the "stones". The others are "artsy" stuff and she would NOT have time to do those at all...and it is not for an art class!!!

I always carry kid's blunt tip scissors in my carryon. This has never been a problem and I have traveled internationally. I use them to cut the cable ties that we use to secure our luggage. HTH

I had embroidery scissors (about 4 inches long with VERY sharp points) in my checked luggage and didn't have problem with them on the ship so I think you'll be fine on your trip.

FYI, my DS had homework during our cruise in April. He bought a soda and brought something to eat with him down to the quiet Promenade Lounge during the afternoon and did it. Many people complimented him on his idea!

TOTALLY agree with you on this one. What's the worst case scenario if she turns the project in late or not at all? I told my first grader's teacher, "With all due respect, we will not be doing homework on our trip." Not that the teacher is thrilled with that but she'll get over it. Now my fourth grader is a different story but the teacher understands that we will be turning the homework in slowly during the week we get back. I decided double homework the week we get back is worth it for a homework-free cruise.

Her teacher ok'd the bracelet....so I think that will be the easy one. All we have to do is find some "stones" and maybe some beads and glue them on and fix it so it looks like a bracelet.

The comic book is coming along. She may have enough of it done, so that all she has to do on the ship is color it. She's writing about a trip on The Magic, one person wants to go..one doesn't and what a good time this person has
when he/she actually gets on the ship....it's actually quite good. We might even have to get it published!!!!! lol

Out of curiosity, did you happen to ask the teacher for a little extra time to do the homework? I would think most teachers would give her extra time.

The 17th is their last day of school before the Winter break. So, that's it.. and report cards come out the 7th of Jan..so we don't have much choice but to do them.

I've got paper, colored pencils, SCISSORS, pens, pencils, glue...she should be fine.

I just freaked because I just thought I couldn't take one more "event"....before this cruise.

Anyway...we leave for ORL tomorrow evening.....God willing....

I will let everyone know what happens......

Phyllis - Many, many years ago a teacher ruined our cross country trip by assigning "busy work" for my son to do. The important parts of the trip were overshadowed by her zealous attempt to "punish" us and him for not being present for her class. (Yes, I still have a lot of "heartburn" over this one!)

What many teachers don't understand is that your child is being given an opportunity to meet and talk with people from all around the world. Their eyes will be opened to new experiences in a way that books can never show them.

We home school and try to make every vacation something that is not only educational but fun for our child. If you could incorporate some of the trip into the assignments, maybe it would benefit your child even more. It might be possible that the teacher would readjust the project so that the cruise would be included. You just never know how teachers, school administrations and the like work. Wishing you the best on this...
