School Discpline Issue

I think a lot of people would change their mind about how the principal handled the situation if you spent a couple days just observing in an elementary school.

Think about it from the adult's perspective. If the rest of the class sees a child get away with not responding to three requests, how many of them are going to do as they are told in the future?

Exactly. I think the principal would really appreciate an apology, but I understand why the OP over-reacted, she is after all, a mother.

Maybe, but that could go both ways. I've seen kids out of control and teachers out of control and even parents out of control when I've been in the schools, so it could be one of many things.

The kid might not have been listening. Kids don't some times. The principal might have been overreacting. Teachers do sometimes. We weren't there; we don't really know.

The point is, the OP has not been back, I don't think, so I think she got the idea of what everyone thinks. Letting go is hard when you have little ones and the idea of other people disciplining them is scary. I know the OP was probably just a knee jerk reaction connected to separation anxiety from her child!

I have heard (not an expert in this area!!) that boys/men truly have "selective hearing." I figure that you either work around it, or train them to pay attention. My guess is that their futere wives would prefer the later!

I think that the schools have to use what options they have for time-out. If the hallway is what your school has, so be it. I've never had a client whose primary trauma was a school time-out.

I wasn't there - so I am hearing just one side.

I will say though that the job of a child this age is to learn to listen and follow direction. A timeout for not listening isn't really all that harsh.
