Accompanied DD to a school dinner today - she starts Reception in September. The meal was ok - not brilliant but certainly edible. I picked up a menu as they just rotate each week every 4 weeks and was quite impressed. A vegetable is compulsory - obviously they can't force them to eat it but they do have to have at least one on their tray. Not a beefburger or turkey twizzler in sight. Pasta or rice as an option most days and a vegetarian choice every day.

It certainly sounds better than my junior school in the 1960's - we had such delicacies as Brown Stew (chunks of fatty meat with bone hard vegetables in a thick brown goo) followed by semolina. Makes me feel sick just thinking about it - AND we were made to eat it all. Happy days!

How big is the school? DDs school offer a vegetarian alternative every day but there are only enough meals ccoked for the number of children eating. The vegetarians always get their meals set aside (although they have to specifically request not to have fish!!) but the other children are often unlucky and the last in the hall get left with the veggie meals that no one else wanted. The food is good but the choice is really non-existant.

Personally i think that the food choice in primary schools is awesome but not in secondary schools! i stay clear of the school canteen in secondary.....i usually bring a packed lunch :rotfl:

Yumm...... :)

our school is pretty good for the actual meals but they have a " snack " bar that is appalling
dd just takes sandwiches etc

My DDs school has excellent choice and seems to carry an excellent range of well balanced meals.

I'm just too mean to pay for 2 school dinners every day, LOL and send them off with a packed lunch instead!

I always gave my children a packed lunch as I knew exactly what they were eating and how it had been prepared.

^Yep :teeth:

I'm incredibly wary of things like that as i have a phobia of throwing up meah :sad2:

But yeah and sometimes it can be the healthier option.....unless they end up swapping thing like carrots for malteasers of something (which i was guilty of  )
