Slightly inspired by the "Um, creepy" thread--
Over the summer and past few months, are school has been blocking more and more sites. It is getting to be a very controversial issue. It started at the end of last year when every game site was blocked. (Obviously, things like myspace and facebook were already blocked.) I think they have some way of monitoring the sited that people go to. I went here during free period one day. The next day, the DIS was blocked! I used to get Sudoku puzzles during free to do during lulls in French. That sight is blocked. I had to find a comic strip for Spanish class. The Calvin and Hobbes sight is blocked. They even managed to block the site that can be used to get around the blocker. Everyone is frustrated, because the researching capacities of rhe computers are limited. The reasoning is that people waste time on the computer when someone who actually needs it has to wait. Our HS is very small, and there are 7 computer labs, not including the library. Half of them are empty for most of the day. It is frustrating.
What is the situation at your school?

At my school we have three computer rooms but some of the shops such as drafting and design, Commerical Design, and Electronics have about 30 computers each. A lot of web sites are blocked. Games, google images, Myspace, Music websites, you tube, etc are all blocked.

My school district is huge. All (Yes, even the teachers') of the computers in the entire district are networked to the Board of Ed.
My school has 2 computer rooms for computer classes, a computer lab on the first floor, (Used for study hall -?! - and also used for researching, etc.) There is also a library on the second floor. (Once again used for research and school projects.) There are also 30 laptops shared between all of the classrooms in my school.

The only limitations that I know of is that images are blocked. And advertisements.

Meh.
My school computers are ancient and yes, they are monitored. See, we got a new system in grade five, that made it so we had our log in names and stuff. Now, there's people in Fredricton, who log everything we do on the PC. Forums, chat and email are strictly off limits and we lose our privelege to use them if we do anything like that, or look at stuff we shouldn't be.

We have our own log in and account process also. The administrators have lists of everybody's passwords.

There are a lot of sites blocked, which is annoying. That's not the main problem though.

We have some spyware thing on the computers. It makes it so as soon as a page loads, it takes you to some double-click "page is not found" thing. God it's annoying.

We have 2 computer labs, each with 40 computers. None of the sites are blocked, but you can't be in a lab alone. If there isn't a teacher in there, the door to get in is locked.

(we go to the same school)

there aren't enough limitations..
I know of kids looking up things in the libraries after school that shouldn't be seen by people under the age of 18.

My school has over 150 iMacs and eMacs spread across two computer labs and every classroom (the teachers with a SmartBoard get a Macbook instead). We have a server for my whole entire school and they monitor everything you do on your account. Our school only blocks the necessities, aka myspace, youtube, and other things not for little kids' eyes. We get our own logins that everybody knows... Ours aren't thge slightest bit restricted in most cases, but the teachers don't let you use them often. And teachers make sure you aren't playing games while people are supposed to be researching. But in our computer class if we're done with the assignment we all get on and play games.

Adding to Quiffle's post.
In my computers class, a girl was on myspace.
Boy, did she get yelled at.

I get on the school computers once in a blue moon. Myspace is blocked.

I go to a small school. I can DIS, Miniclip, or if I felt like it, MySpace.

People at my school use freebieproxy.com to get around the block to myspace/disboards. But I would never use that

What exactly is a Smartboard. My history teacher really wants one. She talks about how much better school would be with smartboards.

Omg! My 7th grade language arts teacher and my computer teacher have smart boards!

They're like. . . I don't know.
Amazing.

Ah. All the teachers at my school freak out at any mention to myspace. Unless talking about how horrible it is and getting it shut down. Yet, they're not even smart enough to block it on the computers..

My school is the exact same way!! Its really annoying. cuz when you
gooogle something it won't let you go to it!! Also commenting on worldwarquiffle....My school last year was soo obsessed with the myspace thing they sent home a letter to every parent saying to delete there childs myspace and how to. Almost every kids myspace was deleted..obviously they got new ones but still i thought it was a little insane.
