SCAL or other similar programs

Hello -

I haven't scrapbooked a lot in while but trying to get back into and have gained great inspiration for the pages and information here.

I have a Mac computer and a circut and would be interested in something like SCAL or other similar program - so I have a couple of questions:

1. Is there one I can use my current cartridges with?
2. Are the programs worth the money?
3. With the program does my circut have to be hooked up to computer so use the program or does it get downloaded to my circut?

Unless you have an older version of SCAL, you cannot use it with the Cricut. Provo Craft sued Craft Edge so that they cannot make a program that works with the Cricut anymore. Those of us with SCAL 2 make it work by not updating our Cricuts.

There is a free program through Provo Craft called the Cricut Craftroom that has a Mac version. I use a PC, so I don't know anything about the Mac version, but the PC version has improved greatly. I use it with my newer Expression 2 (and keep the regular old Expression for SCAL 2), and have to say that they are working on a lot of the bugs and are getting there.

You could use the Craftroom with your cartridges. I like it because I can set up the mat with papers without having to guess where it might cut, hide cuts that I don't want completed, and WELD letters.

If you wanted to cut things like Reddy's files, or other SVGs from other sites, you'd need either SCAL 3 or Make the Cut and a different kind of machine. (Cameo, eCraft, Black Cat, to name a few). There are reviews of machines on a few sites. A couple of my favorites are, Under a Cherry Tree (beware, Jin's stuff will make you want to run out and get a new cutter!), and SVGCuts.com (Leo and Mary are THE cutest couple ever and are very knowledgeable).

Jennifer - thanks for the information! I am not really in a place to buy a new machine at this time so guess I will have to check out Cricut craftroom. Would really like something I can weld the things together for some pages so will see what they have in regards to that.

Maybe I can find an old verison of SCAL available to use!?!? Thanks for the sites will check out the info.

Reddy - I just love all the images and pages you do! I was looking at your premade pages and so cute! I would like to do premade pages but that would mean I am caught up on my other pages

Glad to help, Michelle. One thing I should mention, you can't use the Craftroom without an internet connection. Which is fine if you're at home, but at a crop without WiFi, it can be frustrating.
