Julie, I was shocked when you said you didn't know what an Elephant Ear was in this week's podcast so, I thought I would help you out. Around here (NC) they're mostly just called Fried Dough. There's also Funnel Cakes but I don't like them as much. Toppings include: Powdered Sugar, Cinnamon Sugar, Melted Chocolate, Fruit (Strawberry or Apple usually) or just plain 'ol Butter. I LIVE for fried dough..... which is why I LOVE beignets so much. Do these pics ring a bell? Surely, you've seen these at local fairs you've attended. Our fair starts next month. My one and only must-have each year is FRIED DOUGH (w/ powdered sugar of course)!!!

Funnel Cake: Made by drizzling the dough into the hot oil via a funnel.

19 days until NC State fair opening

We might go during the first week to get an elephant ear with chocolate.

That is funny. I always thought an elephant ear was a large flakey pastry type cookie. They sell them in France at Epcot. They have another name too. What your picture is of we call a funnel cake. Must be a northeast thing. LOL

Kevin that is what I was talking about Palmiers. Are what our family called Elephant Ears. Thanks for that!!! It was driving me batty I couldnt find the name.

Ok....the photo psted is what I would called "fried dough" but it's not what I know as an "elephant ear".

What I know an "elephant ear" is a long strip of puff pastry which is coiled from each end and then baked and / or fried. It is covered with granulated sugar and / or cinnamon. It lools much more like an ear.

Ok. I stand corrected. I relistened to that segment and I agree with you both. The Palmiers make more sense since the Bunuelos were crunchy. I guess I have FRIED DOUGH on the brain. The fair IS just around the corner after all. FWIW, there are Fried Dough stands AND Elephant Ear stands at our fair but they're selling the same thing. I stay away from the ones that say Funnel Cakes. They're too crispy for me. I much prefer the softer doughy stuff. And here I was thinkin' I was gonna enlighten Julie. :confused3 Turns out I was the one enlightened!! :thumbsup2

Elephant Ears are mmmm good!!! One of our local Catholic parishes has a yearly event called St. Joseph's Sausage Fest -- the best part is the elephant ear stand. The line can get quite long, but it's worth the wait. :thumbsup2

Heading to the VA state fair tomorrow. I will have to try an elephant ear as I have never had one. I usually go for the funnel cakes

Actually, that's what I think of as an elephant ear too. It’s similar to a funnel cake, just made into a different shape.

Never heard of the cookie before. Oh, the things you learn on the internets :upsidedow

The OPs photo is what we always called elephant ears here in Michigan. I've never even seen those things Kevin posted....must be a New Jersey thing!

I never heard of an elephant ear. To me the only thing I have ever seen was funnel cakes. Originally from PA.

I was never a fan of the beaver tails they had in Epcot.

No funnel cakes in New England....just Fried Dough.

Our company has a fried dough stand every summer at the company picnic. Nothing beats free all you can eat fried dough. That is the one time a year that I have a piece (or two).

I do love fried dough, if its the same as the carny food here its just a ball of fried dough and can be filled with assorted pudding, cheese, fruit, etc....

Bah humbug!

I guess its a regional thing, but I'm with the OP on what we call an elephant ear. So it is a Jersey thing? Found this old article from a Florida newspaper to support my claim! ;)

This would make sense since I live just outside Philadelphia. About 45 min from Pennsylvania Dutch country. The Elephant Ear/Palmier thing might also be Russian/Polish in nature which is my grandmothers heritage. I think this is why everyone seems to call it something different. Very interesting though. If I got that fried dough ear I would have been a bit shocked. Not what I would have exspected.

I'm originally from MI and the first picture is exactly what I think of when someone says "elephant ear". These are my most favorite thing in the entire world and I can't tell you the last time that I had one! I settled for a funnel cake when we were back in MI a couple of months ago but not nearly as good!! I'd never seen the things Kevin posted a link for!

Thanks for the yummy pictures!
