Saving the Liberty Belle: Turn It Into a Wedding/Event Venue on Seven Seas Lagoon!

Where would the Liberty Bell dock? Rivers of America is being drained and there is no water connection via water between it and Tiana's water way.

Dave

They'll be water once Cars Land is finished. Just by then the track to easily move the Liberty Bell would be gone. Also not sure if they'll keep the full moat / boat channel to MK. Will still need it to fill/drain but no longer needing it to transfer the Bell.

Dont think it'll be dismantled. It's going to be placed somewhere, but not sure best spot for it besides still in MK at its dock, somewhere in lagoon after tug boat moving, or other.

This will never happen, sorry. The Liberty Belle Riverboat is not a fully powered vehicle. It is designed to run on a track just like the Monorails. It is only able to go forward or backward.

Dave
Can confirm, was an ops manager in Adventureland/Liberty Square. It has an operational boiler, but can't be converted to a "sea worthy" boat. Not designed for that. Like the Empress Lily that is now Paddlefish. For millions of dollars, it would be less expensive to start from scratch instead of converting it, plus no restrooms on board.

It’s parked behind BTM by access road. Blog Mickey says RUMOR is it is going to be dismantled where it sits.

DS said to me “I told you. I still think the engine etc parts are going to DL.” 🤷🏼‍♀️

Are you sure??
I wouldn't seriously suggest it if I didn't do some math on ROI. Disney weddings, even simple ones with short hours and not a lot of food/alcohol purchased, are not cheap. I researched them as a wedding venue option over a decade ago and it was tens of thousands of dollars just for the least expensive venue back then, before high inflation. That venue price does not include the minimum food/alcohol per person price ($100-$250 per person with a 50 person minimum). Even at the very conservative $19,000 per wedding during the slow wedding season ($14,000 venue + $5,000 food/bev minimum), they could have 1-2 (maybe 3) per day if they are shorter in length. Renting it longer would cost more. Let's say 2 weddings/events earning $38,000 per day. Factor in for 15% of the year it's not rented as a venue at all. $38,000 per day x 365 days per year = $13,870,000 , minus 15% no event occupancy ($2,080,500)= $11,789,500 before operating costs. That's on the low end becuase these events could easily go for $30,000+ each. Even if you chop that conservative $11.78M in half for operating costs that leaves $5.89M revenue. If you spent $20M on upgrading it to be in the lake, that means you'd see a return within 3 years when calculating conservatively. The first few years you'd have high demand because it's a new venue that's historic that couples would be all for. So Disney could likely charge more, which means they could get the $20M back in 1-2 years instead of 3-5. Once that initial investment is paid off, it's now a money making machine, even with maintenance/refurb and operating costs.

Been saying this since rumors of demise started. It needs to be preserved but what is best way. Disney needs more wedding/event location options. It can not be a moving ship it would need a permanent dock.

My thoughts have been ~

~ Permanently dock it between WL and the new DVC.
~ Driveway would be off W Wilderness Rd
~ Build a parking lot south of the trail
~ OR guests can walk on the Wilderness Nature Path from either hotel
~ Build bathrooms and maybe wedding suite for getting ready
~ Build a catering kitchen where food can be brought in and readied
~ Maybe build an open air or glass chapel to feel the nature
~ Retrofit the ship to handle receptions and even small ceremonies
~ Make it work for events and conferences
~ Make it part of Disney Meeting & Events, with connect to Disney Weddings
In it's current state it can't move, however I'm proposing they upgrade it to be able to move around the lake. It is powered on it's own, but needs upgrades to steer (since it was on track) and be made water tight. As a piece of Disney World History that moves around the lake, that's the key and what would get people to pay for that event/wedding space. Which then justifies the high dollar cost to make the upgrades. Disney is not likley to do anything where it "sits" and will require regular maintenance but doesn't generate any revenue. Even with $20M to upgrade it, it would likely get the ROI within 2-5 years and then be a money making river boat.

I think you overestimate what people want. I don't think the lake is a draw you think it is. The boat itself is the history. And a moving boat would cost much more to maintain than a stationery. And a stationery boat I was suggesting, with facility support it HAS TO HAVE to be useful in all scenarios, would make plenty of money. But it really doesn't matter ............

There is strong "info" that it will be dismantled. I think in my heart I knew they weren't going to spend any money on it. My son has always believed it will be dismantled and all engine parts will be sent to DL.

I love that Disney Dream .
Mine is even bigger.
That very first Disney Cruise Ship was originally called “ The Big Red Boat”
Disney purchased it ( second hand info from relative that was onboard during that first cruise adventure)…I wantDisney to retire it and convert it to a DVC moored at Castaway Cay for overnight stay.
Obviously not going to ever happen for so many environmental reasons plus cost.
My guess is that the Big Red Boat has gone to that big scrap shipyard in the sky. That boat was old in the early 2000's so it might be a Chevy pickup by now.

I never was on it, but I have a nice memory connected with it. I don't remember the year but on one of my trips to Florida around 2003 I think, I decided to go to the Kennedy Space Ctr. and I went to the Imax movie "Big Blue Marble". I sat in my seat and a few minutes later a family came in that had just returned from a Big Red Boat Cruise. With them was the cutest little girl, I don't think she could have been more that 4 or 5, and she sat right next to me in the theater. While we were waiting she regaled me with how much fun she had on the cruise and how they were going to WDW after they left. She talked on and on and her parents told her to stop talking and not bother me. I told them that I was fine and I had two little girls at one time, they were all grown up now, so it was a pleasant memory for me. She did stop talking when the movie started. shortly after that I felt a pressure on my arm, glanced down and she was sound asleep just leaning against it. Once again I told her parents that I was fine and let her sleep.

Talk about your warm, fuzzies that was one of my highlights. Two days later I am in Magic Kingdom and who comes toward me but that family and she ran up all excited that she got to see me there too. Total strangers and an innocent child just loving being alive and having fun. Heck by now she must be all grown up and I sure hope that she kept that bubbly personality into adulthood., My own little girls were probably in their 30's by the time that happened and that event made me realize how important they were, and still are, to my overall happiness.

A wedding venue would be nearly impossible. There are no restrooms or a kitchen facility on board. I was an Ops Manger in Liberty Square and the Riverboat was one of my attractions. There is no place on the boat to add restrooms and the plumbing needed or a kitchen. Nice idea, but not likely to happen. It would have to be docked somewhere in very close proximity to restrooms and a kitchen. Might have worked in Liberty Square (we did have CM parties on board), but I currently cannot think of anyplace it could be docked to serve as a wedding venue.

Seems like just because they don't have the restrooms, kitchen or plumbing doesn't mean that they can't retrofit it to have it. They don't have a kitchen, just have it catered.

Not as easy as it sounds. There are health codes that need to be adhered to, plus many other regulations. It’s often not worth it to repurpose. Sadly.

I’m a huge one for nostalgia, but you need to be able to let things go. That whole area was so incredibly under utilized.

The riverboat doesn’t mean much to the vast majority of people that visit the Magic Kingdom. It’s not going to pan out in my opinion as a place where people would want to get married.

Nothing is impossible for Disney. For them it is only unwanted. If they could see dollar signs in refitting an object they already have and find a way to charge buckets of money for it, it will happen. I agree that it is unlikely but I don't accept that that can't do it if they want.

Don't forget that Star Wars Land is built on top of what was a wetland location that they insisted for years was not even available for anything else and impossible to do if they wanted too. Yet, by some magic they saw money and found a way. It isn't nostalgia to use the boat in this way, because it is no longer where it belongs, however it seem disgusting to me to demolish a working, magnificently built object like the Riverboat which is exactly what is going to happen.

In another thread I wrote it up like this:
Create a mooring spot in Seven Seas Lagoon with a fireworks view and a dock. Tow it and place it permanently. Build a bus loop and small parking spot for catering. Build a small building for rest rooms and a warming kitchen. Do a light renovation to electrify for lighting and decommission the engine. Hold fireworks dessert parties and book groups for receptions with light catering. Run it out of the Contemporary kitchens, very close by. Guests can arrive by small bus or boat.

Small investment, big PR win, new revenue stream. It would be lovely to see it parked there when we pass by on the ferry and monorail!

That could work but they already have a fake Riverboat in Disney Springs. It would be more of a draw if it were actually operated and it doesn't have to be on 7 seas either Bay Lake would make the fireworks visible. The could even add docks and docking at Discovery Island and make use of that. I think they already have facilities of some sort on the island. They may need to upgrade them. but they must have been there. It has been a long time since I was able to get to the island (around 50 years) so I can't remember. I can't imagine them dumping bunches of people on that particular island with no facilities.

I love the Riverboat, too! I managed it many years ago and was trained to operate it. I'm VERY sad to see it go, but I don't see it being repurposed. I'd never say never, but it's a pretty close never.
