Saved my mileage checks

Hi there :) I am able to claim my mileage from work, and receive a check each month. Last year, a few months before our trip, I started cashing the checks and saved the money for our trip. I couldn't believe how quickly it added up! The cash paid for all of our tips (we used DDP, but the tips REALLY add up), plus almost all of our souvenir money. This year I'll have even more cash! I look at it this way...I've already bought and paid for the gas without any financial hardships, so saving the mileage checks is like a little savings account :cheer2:

Very nice!

That's what we're working on doing with the reimbursements hubby gets, when he can't use the company amex on his business trips and has to use our money up front.

I LOVE my mileage checks. We get them every 2 weeks and for me it's about $200 a check! We sometimes use that to pay something that has come up (like car insurance every 3 months) or if we are really lucky, I put it in our Disney fund!!!!!

Congratulations. I put my mileage checks into my...eventually I have to buy a new car and I intend to pay cash fund......:goodvibes

WOW!!!:worship:

I don't normally get mileage but a couple of years ago I was helping out another branch so I did for several months. I got $800 just in time for our Disney trip that year. It felt like free money!

Remember that if your employer doesn't reimburse you for work related mileage or reimburses you less per mile than the IRS standard amount, you can write off what you haven't been reimbursed on your tax return.

I try to avoid driving my car for work, even though we get 55 cents a mile (I think). Back when I had an ancient car, I thought I could make money on the mileage. Now that I have a newer one, I think I come out in the hole by the time you calculate in the fuel, more frequent oil changes, increased wear and tear on the vehicle, etc.

Not to mention that you have to cover any damage to your vehicle yourself. I had to drive to Atlanta this week and considered using my own vehicle, but then remembered the THREE times through the years I've had a windshield cracked by rocks while driving through Atlanta. Quite ridiculous.

Just a head's up. Banks can consider checks to be stale if they are more than 6 months old. So don't keep them uncashed for too long. (Or open a separate account for them.)
