I always make these Christmas morning. I use a really basic recipe, sausage, bisquick, some water, and cheese.

I'm wondering if I can go ahead and fry the sausage up and prepare the balls the night before and refrigerate and then just pop them in the oven Christmas morning.

Anyone ever tried this?

Yes. My wife does that and they turn out fine.

I don't have exact amounts right at the minute, will post them later. They are really easy.

It's one package of sausage (fry it up like hamburger meat for tacos)
bisquick
cheese (I think it's two cups of shredded cheddar but I always add more
and some water

After you brown and drain the sausage you just add the other ingredients and mix well. Then roll them into balls and bake. I'll post exacts as far as measurements and cooking time later.

I usually make two batches that way I have plenty to take to my dad's for our family get together......we have gone to just doing a buffet of finger foods instead of a big meal.

oh thanks! I will certainly check back later for the precise measurements. I cant wait to try something new :) And sausage and cheese sounds like something that would make hubby happy too!

I make sausage balls similar to this often.

But the way I make mine is a slightly different than the previous poster...

Ingredients are simple

1 pound HOT sausage - I find that Jimmy Dean is the best
2 cups Bisquick
16 ounces SHARP Cheddar Cheese

I never have added water. And I don't pre-cook the sausage.

Mix ingredients with hands. Roll into balls.

Place onto cookie sheet and bake at 325 for 25 minutes.

That's it.

:santa:we love these and always have them during the holiday!!!!:santa:

we are vegetarian, so we use the the Morningstar breakfast patties.

My DH takes them to his office luncheon.

They never last long - we can't stand the yummy smell, so we are sampling as soon as the first batch is out of the oven!!!!

we add garlic powder to ours - gotta have garlic!!!!!

:wizard::santa:

We've never precooked the sausage for sausage balls before. You could also just make the balls out of uncooked sausage, cheese, and bisquick and pop those in the oven in the morning. May have to cook a little longer, but it would save you a step the night before.

I never precook the sausage, either and this is the same recipe I use. I also eat them dipped in a little bit of jelly, preferably red plum. Love the sweet and salty together. Yummm!

A similar variation to this that is YUMMY!!

1 pkg. regular sausage, browned(I use Jimmy Dean!)
1 pkg. hot sausage, browned (again I use Jimmy Dean!)
1/4 cup green pepper, diced (cook with sausage)
1/4 cup red pepper, diced (cook with sausage)
shredded cheddar cheese (I just eyeball the amount to what I want!)
Ranch dressing (I don't remember exact amount, but I use just enough to coat)
Wonton wrappers

Mix browned sausage with cheese and ranch. Place wonton wrappers in mini muffin pans. Scoop a dollop of mixture into wonton. Place in 325 oven for about 5 - 10 minutes ~ just enough to lightly brown wonton!

I have made them both ways, precooked sausage and not precooked. It seems like when I precooked the sausage, it cooked more of the fat out of them. This made them better when they were cold--not so greasy tasting. I prefer them right out of the oven Christmas morning, but sometimes take them to my mom's too.

These sound really great! I'm going to add them to my list for the holidays, thanks so much! :goodvibes

One more tip to make mixing easier: If you have a stand mixer, dump all your ingredients in the bowl and mix with the dough hook. Super-fast and much easier on the hands! It also helps if you let the sausage soften up a little first.

We make a big batch when we make them. I have never heard of precooking the sausage either. We roll the balls and what we are not cooking right away put on a cookie sheet in the freezer and allow to individually freeze. Transfer to a zip bag once frozen then pull out as many as you need later. Just cook longer from the frozen state

i don't pre-cook my sausage before mixing either. i always make mine in my food processor. less work for my hands. i refrigerate them and bake them whenever. i've also frozen them made up and uncooked for use later on. they taste the same either way. delicious! they're one of my favorite things!

These sound really good but I just want to be clear on the sausage. You don't cook it at all, you just mix the raw sausage in the mix and then bake for 20 minutes. And that's long enough?
Sounds like the perfect thing to cook with all the sweet buns we will have!

That is how I did it the other day, turned out YUMMY, everyone loved them. I have a feeling I could put it all together then freeze, just pull out to bake xmas morning.
