Sat Nav Being Mistaken For Radar Detector

I will be using my Sat Nav when we go to Florida soon, I was just wondering if Radar Detectors are illegal in Florida and would my Sat Nav be mistaken for a Radar Detector and I get pulled over to be told I can't use it. I would not use a Radar Detector to avoid a ticket as I obey the speed limits, been driving over 30 years and never got a ticket. :cool1:

I've never heard of this happening. Don't the two systems(radar detector/Satellite Navigation) use different technology? Sorry, other than Virginia can't help with where RDs are illegal.

I know that my Sat Nav does not send out a signal but what I was wondering if the police just saw my Sat Nav in my windscreen would they pull me over thinking it was a Radar Detector.

I wouldn't worry about it. As far as I know, radar detectors aren't illegal here. If they are, my DH is in trouble.
As far as the GPS, we use it every time we travel and have never had any problem.

It looks like the OP is from the UK. Do you already have North American maps? The cost to buy North American maps for your unit might be almost as expensive as buying a new GPS unit when you get to the US.

I don't even think FL has a law against radar detectors. Don't worry about it.

The only states on the east coast where radar detectors are illegal are Virginia and Conneticut. I have driven to FL many times with my Garmin on the dash and it stays there through out my stay's there. Never had a problem.

Yes I do have the maps and I have already have my favourites sorted so we can get anywhere we want to go.

I don't know about Florida but here in Pennsylvania I got pulled over for having a Sirius Satilite Radio (looks just like a radar detector). The police told me the ticket was for "blocking my field of view" (it was mounted on the windshield below rear-view mirror, now mounted on clock radio face-plate)

My advice go ahead with the GPS system but "becareful where you mount it!"
Any doubts call the Florida State Highway patrol and ask them for advice on the device and the proper use in the state.

According to the Garmin website California and Minnesota have laws that prevent using suction cup mounts while the the vehicle is moving.
