I'm looking for any oppinions on Santa Monica beach??? After leaving Disneyland we wanted to move closer to Universal Studios and then thought that staying near the beach and getting in some beach time might be nice rather than staying in the city nearer to US, yet we can still get there in a short time. I found the Santa Monica beach and the Santa Monica pier and also nearby Third Street promenade???? Anyone who has been there have any oppinions???

Last year and year before myself and teenage daughter and Son (now 16-1/2 DS and 18-1/2 DD) stayed in Redondo Beach. We LOVED it! We visited Third Street Prom. also. We visited Santa Monica Pier. Did not do the beach/water fun there though, but the beach and fun & Sun play appeared same as Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. These three beaches are beautiful and sooo much fun. Beautiful walking paths viewing the beautiful beachfront homes and beautiful properties along Manhattan Beach. Drive from Redondo to Disneyland was not bad at all. We got up early, drove, parked and was there before opening at 8am. I am 47 and had tons more energy than the teenagers. ha ha. Third Street Prom. is a fun L.A. experience of shopping. Most stores are same as most cities. Urban Outfitters is a great store for teenagers, etc. (youth). I have a few post cards I really wish I could scan and attach for you to view, but I don't know how you all do that.
E-mail me if you have more questions.

Thanks so much for the info!! I will have 2 teenage sons with me and my husband.
We will actually be driving to Universal studios from here as we will be done with DL at this point of our trip. I read its about 20-30 minutes.

Hermosa11 referred to Redondo Beach which is south of Santa Monica. I would say it's about 20 mins. drive south of Santa Monica without traffic. Santa Monica is about a 30 mins. drive to Universal Studios, also without traffic. I have to caution you that L.A. traffic during the week is pretty bad not only during rush hours but also in between. Redondo Beach is south of LAX and when I was commuting from Orange County to the Santa Monica area along the 405 fwy., I always ran into traffic just north of the airport. Even during non-rush hour periods. Hermosa11 described driving from Redondo to DL. If they did that drive in the morning, they were driving against rush hour traffic. You would be going with it driving to US a good deal of the way. If you stay in Santa Monica, I would not leave for US any earlier than 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. I also wouldn't return until after 7:00 p.m. if you weren't planning on returning before 2:00 p.m.

That said, Hermosa11 is right, the South Bay area which is where Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan beach are located are beautiful. Santa Monica is considered part of the Westside of the L.A. area and is more urban and more densely populated. It, too, is a great area. There are a number of homeless who hang out on the cliffs just above the beach but probably no more than you might find in any other urban area. Third Street promonade comes alive at night on the weekends with lots of people walking around. There's lots of fun energy and street entertainers on the weekends.

If you'd like a nice dining experience, and you're in the area, try Tony's Fishmarket restaurant. There are two Tony's restaurants on Redondo Beach Pier - the original, with the round lounge up on the 2nd floor, and the new Fishmarket Tony's that has windows facing south and west - time your dinner to watch the sunset - it's beautiful, then you get to watch the lights turn on along the beach - very nice. :)

thankyou almost goofy for the info. I wouldn't mind driving back after 7 p.m. but I certainly would want an earlier start than 9:30-10 a.m. Perhaps I will rethink my plans.

Maybe I would be better off to stay near US and commute to the beaches

Any suggestions on a good location near US? OR

I am staying at the GC at DL so HOW is the drive from DL to US in the morning?? I could just add a night there and then move to a beach area

thanks for the picture MaryJo and the info.....sounds wonderful!!

You guys are sooooooo cool and know soooo much. I had tears in my eyes looking at that beautiful photo!! (hee). My son and I marked our spot (with our chairs! !! hee) in the sand right under that tall building. We stayed just a few blocks up on PCH. Memories!! Almost Goofy ! You lived there and you were able to bring up so much helpful information on traffic and all.
I just had to put my $.02 in..........I loved our vacation to this area.
I hope to bring back just as great memories with our DisneyWorld vacation.
