We don't tip our sanitation workers either. In fact, it never occurred to me to do so until I saw this post. Heck, they get tremendous benefits and make upwards of $70K a year in Chicago, so they're doing quite well IMO.
I never thought to tip them but I'm more than happy to pay my taxes and hope they have a very nice salary. Those guys are out there rain/snow or shine and always take whatever we put out. I hate taking the garbage to the curb so I shudder to think what they come across.
In fact, maybe I will get them a case of beer and a card.
I don't tip sanitation workers, heck I don't SEE my sanitation workers. LOL How in the world would I tip them? Our drivers never leave the truck, I spend more time in the rain picking up the cans they dropped off the arms too soon then they do. LOL We don't get a newspaper so no tips there, and we don't see our postal worker either, in fact every time we do see a postal worker leaving our mail it's someone different. lol I'm sure they appreciate any tip they get but personally we don't ask for extras so we don't tip.
Heck, we only put the cans out 3 weeks out of 4 every month.
When I lived in NY it was expected. You would tape the envelope to the underside of the pail cover. I knew it was recieved when I came home and the covers were on my pail and the pail was neatly on the driveway. We always did it the last pickup day before Xmas Day.
You could see which neighbors did or didn't tip the sanitations folks because on that day those who did had neat pail, those who didn't were missing covers, they were in the street- run over covers.
When I moved to FL- it seemed like a different culture- tipping was rarely expected. The appliance man was in shock when I tipped him- and the furniture movers were stumbling over themselves. The first year I taped the envelope to the cover and it was still there when I got home! Finally I asked neighbors and was told it was not expected.
I don't tip the trash men. Not expected in this area.
I do tip my mailman, because he is awesome. Anytime I have a package he brings it and mail to the door. He always has stamps, so if you see him and need a book he sells them on the spot. No markup. He just believes it is good customer service especially with the old neighbors. I can even give him packages to mail without postage during slow times and he will mail them and give me the change. I Really miss him on his days off or vacations. I give him the grand sum of $10.
None here. Nobody tips DH for making sure their sewage gets where it needs to go and both salaries are paid from my monthly utility bill. Not much difference in my opinion.
My grandma used to leave a 6-pack of beer for the garbage man but that was back when it was a much more personal service and you saw your garbage man instead of what we have now, which is loud trucks of strangers waking up my baby early every Friday morning.
