San Juan Port Damaged

I am hearing that there is damage to a port in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Another site I am on, the posts are claiming it may affect the Treasure. Nothing has been officially announced by DCL. It is my understanding that other cruise lines that have bigger ships are currently not going to Puerto Rico. We are scheduled on the Treasure’s 2/1 sailing and have not heard anything from DCL. I was wondering if anyone has heard about this or has any other information.

I don't think the Treasure is really going to Puerto Rico, is it? I think it's mostly doing the Eastern/Western trips that the Fantasy was doing (St. Thomas, Tortola, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Falmouth). So, hopefully it won't disrupt anything!

There is 1 Eastern leaving Feb 1 stopping at San Juan instead of St Thomas. But rest of Treasure eastern are Tortola and St Thomas

The Treasure is doing some Eastern itineraries that include:
  • Tortola, British Virgin Islands
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Disney Castaway Cay

I'm on the 2/1 Treasure sailing as well (and it definitely is scheduled to go to San Juan!). There's been nothing official about our San Juan port call, if something changes DCL will send us some sort of notification. DCL may be waiting to see if the port reopens in the next week or so as indicated in the article.

Maybe the Treasure will dock at the Pan American pier. DCL would probably provide bus service to Old San Juan if that happens.

We're also on the Feb1 sailing, to arrive in San Juan on Wed. If we miss, it will be the 2nd time we are forced to miss PR. Last time, we were on the Fantasy 11 night Southern and skipped due to the protests re: the Governor. Not happy. I get it; the USCG has a necessary safety first approach, but we're bracing to be disappointed.

We are on Feb 1 sailing and also missed that stop previously!

We stopped in Puerto Rico on the Fantasy on January 2 of this year. Is the Treasure so much bigger it can’t dock at the same pier? Those articles make it sound like it’s only the largest RCL ship that’s impacted.

I was also on that 11 day cruise in 2019 that cancelled the PR stop! We had a great time there this year… Old San Juan is so much fun to walk around. Glad we finally made it 😁

We are also on the 2/1 sailing and missed the same San Juan port stop on the Southern. We booked this itinerary just for San Juan! It would be crazy if it gets rescheduled twice. I wonder if St Thomas will be the replacement again? I'm staying positive and hopeful and not telling my kids there is a chance of missing it again.

I called today to see if the CC line had any news. No info at their level on a change of ports. I asked about divert ports & if St. Thomas was the usual. The CM said that was the Captain's call (thought I doubt that; there's far too much coordination for the Captain to make that call on his/her own).

*sigh*

Treasure is ~ 9,000 tons displacement larger than Fantasy, which isn't that much larger in cruise ship terms. For the rest of the world that's a US Navy destroyer. :D Your post gives me hope! Here's to hoping!

Wonder why they just don't tender in?
Tendering isn't really feasible in Bahia de San Juan. If you look at the chart pasted below, you can see that the white area is all dredged channel - not too deep, and further south is too far away & too shallow. Usually, charts show fathoms for water depth (6 feet = 1 fathom), but for harbors NOAA charts show feet. 20 odd feet for the most part. Ships go in, maneuver & go to the pier. Not a lot of hanging around. Their positional thrusters allow a cruise ship to 'hover' but with that much sail area (ship area above the waterline), she can get pushed hard by wind, especially if the tide is flowing in that direction. Long story short; it's too crowded, too shallow, and too dangerous to run aground.
