I need help in this ongoing debate in my family! If you have a Salt & pepper shaker set where 1 has 1 hole in the top and the other has more holes in the top (usually 3 or 4) which one do you put the salt in?

My mom always put the salt in the shaker with many holes; DH insists that the pepper should go in the one with many holes! What do you do?

I know this sounds silly but it has been discussed during dinner quite frequently. I know, maybe I should just buy a pepper grinder LOL!

I agree with your mom. Although my DH would agree with your husband because he likes lots of pepper. :teeth:

While your mom is right, salt traditionally goes in the shaker with more holes, I think your dh has a great idea. The trend now is to use more spice and less salt.

I would definately say the one with more holes has salt... it's the way i've always done it. I'm not a big pepper fan though, so one hole is more then enough... lol.

Mom is right, but I agree with the others, I LOVE pepper, even though we normally buy the pepper to use in our grinder.

:rolleyes2 I was just talking about this same thing yesterday with a co-worker. I said 2 holes Pepper 3 holes salt! :confused3 Her Mom does the exact opposite! :confused3

Your mom is right.

To eliminate that issue, we use the sea salt and pepper that comes with built in grinders from Costco. No more issues, and my grinder doesn't fall apart after a year of heavy use!

most grocery stores now stock the mccormick grinders, ours has several varieties available,, we love the sea salt and frrresh ground pepper, and its actually cheeper around here to buy the disposable grinders that the salt and pepper for the grinders.

as for the original ?

i was always taught that salt was singular, pepper muliti, but my mom always managed to get shakers that had removable tops,, and would get them with both shakers with multiple holes.

Froggy,

If you've got a costco, we got the tellicherry pepper one cheaper than the mccormack one and it has 5 times the peppers. They're 3.99 each!

I remember my Nana having shakers that had holes that made an S and a P. Defeats that purpose, but there was no question what was in what!
