I know I should go to the credit boards for more info, but I'm sure someone here can give me some preliminary info. Here's the story...
DH graduated from college 11 years ago. His parents were repaying the loans until his DM got cancer and had no insurance. Since obviously, her health was more important, she stopped paying on them. DH and I were not aware of this. Then Sallie Mae agreed to put the account into forebearance. The account came off forebearance about 5 months ago. At this time they put a lean on his ssn and took our income tax refund (that was actually all mine since he was self employed all of last year). They agreed to return this in writing with the agreement that we would pay $165.00/month until it was paid off. Since they started calling to collect we have made payments, even before we had a written agreement in place. We signed a the agreement for $165 w/ the understanding that they would return our income tax refund. Since then they have frozen DH's bank account and persued wage garnishment. In total, they have taken over $5000 from the tax refund and from his bank account. In the meantime, they have holds on his paychecks at both jobs until he signs the wage garnishment papers. However, they refuse to send them. One of his boss' is threatening to fire him over this. I just need some advice on what to do know, if there is anything we can do.
