sales tax question

Okay, I'm from Oregon and we don't have sales tax :) I know, it's great! But we make up for it with very high income and property taxes.

When I look at buying AP online, it wants to charge me the 6.5% FL sales tax. Do I, as an out of state person, have to pay the sales tax? I've had other online purchases from other states where the state tax was waived based on my location.

Thanks in advance for any (helpful) input!!

EVERYONE (except for certain US Service personnel purchasing tickets at Shades of Green Resort) must pay the 6.5%.

WDW admission is deemed as being sold and used in the State of FL, so everyone will pay sales tax. The only way around it is if you are military and purchase tickets on base or at Shades of Green.

Interesting.... I bought a Disneyland AP last month and the price is just the price online. If the CA sales tax is added, it's bundled into the price you see. Now I'm considering buying at WDW when my current AP expires and see the difference in pricing structure.

Florida law requires the payment of FL sales tax on commercial sales of theme park tickets.

Even if you buy a WDW ticket off the shelf at a Disney Store in another state,
you would pay the 6.5% Florida tax.

CA doesn't charge sales tax on theme park admission.

Yes they do. Its just included in the price they quote. Similar to how airfare is now quoted including all taxes and fees. Disneyland has done it that way since its opening. The actual ticket price is calculated so that with tax, it works out to a round number.

As a fellow Oregonian, I understand completely. On a positive note, if you make a purchase at WDW and have Disney ship it home for you, they won't charge you any tax - just the shipping charge. (But then that's true for everyone, not just Oregonians.)

That is concerning "City Tax" by the city of Anaheim.

California "State Tax" (7.5%) is a different matter.
Everything I can find online says the State of CA does not charge sales tax on theme park tickets.

California sales tax only applies to sales of tangible personal property. California does not tax services such as repair labor, service businesses, or sporting, theme park, or admission tickets. They do not tax software downloads or music or app downloads. All of these things mentioned are not considered tangible personal property and are therefore not subject to sales tax.

Fun fact. If you were to buy a Disney Premier pass at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth however, they will still charge the prorated Florida sales tax based on the Disney World portion of the ticket (I’m guessing on about $700 of the $1400 ticket price or around $45 in Florida tax).

Again, California sales tax does not apply to sales of theme park admission tickets.

I'm glad others answered your question. I wouldn't have thought the way you were thinking but I'm so used to sales tax on everything. We got a nice break when going down to Orlando.

FWIW if you're thinking about Universal they also will charge sales tax. Also FWIW you may have sales tax on other theme or amusement park companies. For instance if I go to purchase Six Flags St. Louis tickets sales tax is added on. Six Flags St. Louis is in MO and I live in KS. They don't even ask you where you live. They only ask what park you want to purchase tickets from. Based on other people's comments the CA Six Flags parks may have their total price listed differently than the other parks throughout the nation do.

Don't buy at the ticket window there. It will cost you about $20 more. By online, at least 30 to 60 days ahead and link to your MDE so you can book your fastpasses.

The $20 prearrival discount doesn’t apply to APs. They’re the same rate online as at the gate. The discount is on 3-10 day Tourist (non-FL) MYW tickets.

Yes you pay sales tax for FL tix.

(And no, sales tax is not charged on CA admission tickets for theme parks.)

Florida tourism (people paying the sales tax) is what allows the zero income tax for FL residents. It's common for states with high tourism to have low income tax since a lot of the funding is covered by the sales tax collected.

Here in Michigan we have 6% sales tax, 4.25% income tax and a high gas tax. There are certainly some states with higher rates.

Florida looks pretty good to me : )
