Safety question ?

You don't live in the states so you would not understand what we are dealing with here

I don't, but I don't live in a bubble. Plus, posters who DO live in the States are pretty much echoing what I said. There's nothing wrong with being aware of your surroundings, but it's useless to live in fear.

Let me ask you..do you go to church? Are you afraid every week that a shooter is going to burst in and shoot up the place a la Dylan Roof. I have a feeling I know the answer..

We do go to church and no I do not live in fear but I just worry about what is going on. You are not safe doing anything anymore that is the sad thing, when we were growing up you never heard of this stuff happening and now it is all that is on tv .

What took place in western new York is what scared me. We are a half and half family so I want to make sure we are safe

What is a half and half family? And isn't your DH a NY State Trooper? If I'm not confusing you with someone else, and he is, I'd hope that your DH would be able to ease your concerns with your trip.

One thing is certain. People are justifiably angry about what appears to be the inappropriate use of violence by police officers. Honestly, I am too, and I'm not black. The actions of the police officers have created a desire for people to want to DO something and to be heard. Staging protests is how BLM chooses to be heard. It is a very young and loose knit organization. Many peaceful protests are happening all around the country. I hope that this organization can find a way to merge their goals with clear-headed leaders so their voices can be heard. I don't want to see this movement go the way of the black panthers and become militant.

Their cause is just, if they can reign in the hot heads.

I support law enforcement, but I believe the recent incidents that have incited anger in our country were not handled properly by the individual officers that killed the men. I also think the law enforcement leaders should have come out immediately with strong statements and actions to indicate these events are extreme and the officers should be treated in the same manner as any other murder suspect. Honestly, I am appalled by the events.

Newsflash...there are mixed race families and families of all kinds in the South, too. People don't bat an eye and all get along fine.

Virginia Beach is a heavily military area with people from all over the country living there. You'll find even more variety of people because of the military presence.

Interesting...so you're worried about BLM but not a shooter like Dylan Roof. I wonder what the difference is......

The looting and the starting of fires is not the way to get things done.

In no way would I fear going to Virginia Beach. I'm puzzled as to why you would feel hesitant, but obviously you do.

We fear it because we will be on major roads and these groups have been known to shut down roads and start setting stuff on fire
