Saddam Hussein -- U.S break Geneva Convention again

WOW! When I heard this news, I started wondering...how are people going to turn this situation against America? Well, my question has been answered. It's amazing how differently people can feel about the capture of an evil man! I feel that he is being treated amazingly well! I don't think that Mr. Bush would get the same treatment in Iraq!

BTW.......I think that our country has every right to be proud of this victory. I fear that many more horrible things would have taken place world wide if we had not stepped in when we did. Yes, I do agree that our allies deserve recognition as well. Are they not receiving it?

Proud to be an American!!!!!!!!

jj.........

I think you make some excellent points Jjcollins. The U.S., under the current "W" administration, has done nothing but trample the rights of individuals from other nations as well as the rights of U.S. citizens. The W administration feels and has stated that "you're either with us, or against us." They believe that the U.S. only does right, regardless of what actions or deeds are taken. And, if our actions run against that of international law, oh, well... We're the United States and we do what we want.

Please keep in mind that not all U.S. citizens are so narrow minded, bigoted, arrogant, and blood-thirsty. Some of us want to send the current administration packing (and we will!) and bring the U.S. back into favor in the world.

Keep up the good ideas! We are listening!

I like the way the writer Peggy Noonan puts it in a column today:

First, let's just be happy. Let's feel a burst of joy.

Let's not be boring people who Consider the Implications. Let's not talk about the domestic political impact. For just a day let's feel the pleasure history just handed us....

...All the journalists and politicians, they are always embarrassed to feel joy when something like this happens. They fear it will show a lack of understanding that history is a heavy and ponderous thing, a big tragedy machine, and all progress is illusory. Celebrating a military triumph--and this was among other things a military triumph--seems to them tantamount to Kiplingism, quaintly ignorant and unhelpfully nationalistic. That's why everyone on TV today is furrowing his brow. They know joy is the wrong thing to be feeling. It's unsophisticated.

But normal people don't have to be sophisticated. They can be normal. And happy. And say what normal Americans say when something great in history happens. "Thanks, God. Thanks a lot."

Into favor in the world? Like where we were with the previous administration, right before 9/11? Gee, that ought to be helpful!

I guess we don't have a flu epedemic anymore because it isn't on the stinking TV every 30 seconds - maybe capturing Saddam cured everyone!!!

Maybe I am an "uppity" American, but I don't care what you did, as Americans we should be better than those who would exploit another's downfall, no matter what the circumstances. It is a matter of class - no matter how another country would handle the situation. If in fact it is not a violation of the Geneva convention to show his picture, we still didn't have to show him being searched for lice, as a matter of class on our part. And, no, I do not think the former Iraqi government's behavior was acceptable toward POWs - or anyone else for that matter. I just think that we make our job harder by sticking this in people's faces, as they think we are arrogant already. Let the Iraqi people make that call, not us.

Oh, and very bad taste by both of the major parties using this as a way to get votes...

I had heard earlier in the day when they were commenting about the video, that he was being searched for cyanide capsules. So even tho it looks like a lice check (but why search just those 2 areas of his head) perhaps they were looking for a capsule hiding around his ears. I just watched the video again and if they were searching for lice, they certainly didn't do a very good job. Watch the video again and you'll see how quick it was. Seemed they were only looking around his ear area.

Three Circles,
Lovely to "hear" a voice of such reason. Hope your vision of the future comes through at the next election!
I just hope everyone calms down a little and takes a little pleasure out of the fact that for the Iraqi people, the future is now a bit brighter. As I said earlier, "it's a pity that George W's daddy didn't take him out years ago IMO when he had a great opportunity and wide support." Iraq would now be so much further ahead, and so many more lives would not have been ruined.
Thank you, jj, for starting this really good thread. The opinions voiced here have been so illuminating.

I don't know if this has already been discussed but...

1. What is the difference between a "War Criminal" and a "Prisoner of War"?

2. Someone said that this was a great day for America but wouldn't a great day for America be capturing those responsible for 9/11 or reviving the lost respect we had in the world.

3. I think the capture of Saddam is a great moral booster for our troops overseas. They deserve our utmost respect and admiration. All it took was a few hundred of our soldiers’ lives, a hundred billion dollars, and thousands of innocent civilian lives. We should be proud that we captured the former leader of a once sovereign nation that we said was bad and had terrible weapons.

Sorry to be redundant...........but.....WOW! I am really in amazement over some of these viewpoints! To each his/her own. My sincere gratitude goes to the "W" administration and the troops.

Three Circles,

You made the following comment:

The U.S., under the current "W" administration, has done nothing but trample the rights of individuals from other nations as well as the rights of U.S. citizens.

I hear this statement continually made but have never understood what it meant. I for one have seen no change in "my rights as a U.S. citizen." Would you please share with me how my rights have been "trampled." I honestly can't think of a single thing that I could do before the "W" administration came to office than now. What I see is that I now live in a safer country, I pay less in taxes (which allows me to directly provide more money to charitable organizations that I want), there is a brighter future for medicare, the economy is on the upswing and I have a renewed sense of patriotism. From what I can tell, the "W" administration has done pretty good job.

"Ever fought in a war"
I don't know whether your ignorance is insulting or astounding!
Do you see where the OP is from?
Do you know anything about European history?
Do you know anything about current European conflicts?
I am almost rendered speechless by your post.

Edited to add:
bsnyder - brilliant link, sometimes we all need to lighten up!

Ahhh, I feel like the lone American...I have no love for Saddam or Bush, but I do think Americans would be upset if Bush were captured and they showed him on TV being searched for lice

I have not heard of any Iraquis who are upset that Saddam has been shown on television. I only see one person here from Northern Ireland objecting. In fact, Iraquis are celebrating in the streets!!

Do you read the paper, or watch the news?

Boy I had a great post about my feelings, thoughts and views. I did however have the good sense to delete it all. I had to at least write it. Live in your world only people.
