I feel so wretched, looking into the poverty that afflicts so much of the world as we know it. Kids in India fish for coins in the Ganges using magnets, just because that's all they know. And that's if they learn a skill. Many children are born into utter nothingness and, all too often, die within days from disease or hunger. It's all the helpless mother can do but to look on. How can we even begin to tackle these problems? We sit in our comfy houses, with electricity and heat, internet and talking about Disney, all the while ignorant to the suffering of much of the world. I feel pathetic.

I love to go to Disney! But every time we stay for the fireworks, I ask my DH " how much did that display just cost?" And he knows how my mind works as he says " you don't want to know!"

I always think how many kids could that have fed or how many farms could have been set up?

Do what you can to help! Find a charity you trust and give them some money or time. I sponsor several children through Compassion International. I have gone on several mission trips through my church. We provided safe drinking water to small villages, helped build schools and clinics, but mostly met and worked and hung out with wonderful people in other cultures. It is important work that makes a difference, plus it is very fulfilling.

So true, it is sad indeed, we are so fortunate if we've experienced love in our lives, and have food, shelter, and clothing. Whenever I feel helpless to make a difference, I think of what Mother Theresa said, that we can do no great things, only small things with great love. Do what you can, where you can.

You can never solve all the worlds problems and I don't encourage that you try. Instead, pick one or two causes where the amount of money you can donate will really make a difference. There are so many organizations/projects out there. Choose ones where you can follow the money and see where it goes. Getting water purifiers to villages that don't have a reliable source of drinking water. Getting satellite internet to a school in an underprivileged area so they can access the outside world. Simply getting clothing, vaccines, food to certain places will save lives. Sure, you can donate $50 to a larger organization and trust it will go to good use, but I personally am the kind of donor that likes to know that my $50 just bought 50 vaccines for example, so I seek out more grassroots organizations. I try to do several small donations throughout the year.

FYI
Took a backstage EPCOT tour Feb 2016. The guide said the cost of fireworks for all of WDW was $65,000 per day.

Wow. I had no idea. Imagine what a nice gesture it would be for Disney to forgo a night of fireworks and instead Christmas gift a night's hotel stay for so many thousands of homeless people?

This thread seems like a suitable place to post this.

There is a homeless person next to where I work, Karina. I make a point of stopping and talking to her, because what the homeless crave most, IMO, is human contact. I try to give what little change I have on me.

She's dead.

All that's left is a bunch of flowers with "RIP Karina" written on them. I don't know where they came from. I just feel wretched not doing more to help her, as I sit in my bedroom typing this out on my laptop computer. The social divide even in my own country is shocking!

Disney as a company has a fairly sizable annual charitable giving program. They have donated to homeless programs as well as other types of giving, including the VoluntEARS program.

I feel that way every time I use clean water. I feel how lucky I am to access to clean water. Water is our last precious resource.

That is really sad about the homeless woman near your work, Domo. Makes you wonder if she has any family nearby.

Just think if all of us here on the Dis, gave up one, just one, of our Disney trips, and instead, sent the money that we would have spent on a Disney trip, to a legitimate charity organization to help those in need. Can you imagine how many could be helped.

[EDITED] - I don't want credit for a small effort. Erased.
