My Dear Husband is in the Oregon Army National Guard. Ever since 9/11 we have known there was a possibility he would be called up for duty. He has been in the military since he graduated from high school- first in the USMC reserves based out of San Francisco, CA and when he moved to Oregon in 1993 he switched to the Guard. So, he's getting close to 20 years in the military. I'm very proud of him. He also has his college education and is a professional investigator for a large school district here in Portland. (Trying to bust some military stereotypes out there).
He came home last night from a Nat'l Guard meeting and he tossed a desert camoflouge water pack onto my lap and said this was issued to me. I didn't get it at first (we knew he was on the list for Afghanistan fall of 2005) but then he said, "They called me up for Iraq. I'm scheduled to go June 15th." I was stunned. He had told me something about how they wre short of men for the next tour, and they were looking for people with his specialty, but he said a couple of weeks ago that the chances were maybe 20%. So we went on with our lives and I didn't think about it.
I'm stunned. I have two small boys- 6 and almost 3. They sure love their daddy. My parents and my in-laws still live in California, so I don't have family around me. I have several good friends though. My parents bought their retirement home up here last fall...maybe they will be able to retire early, I don't know.
Just please keep me and my family in your thoughts. I will keep ya posted.
Thanks so much.
