In our case there isn't really any kind of Neighborhood Blockwatch program... so the police /city bylaws services DOES have a non-emergency number you can call if you feel that there MIGHT be a situation but you personally do not want to get involved too closely. It's definitely not the immediate response that is often the USA way but they do follow up on situations that they have concerns about.

There's not any immediate area near my house that a child should really be playing in public space - it's near busy roads. Like I said, on their own fenced/gated property or someone else's, sure, but most of the time outside out front of the houses, they are on their way somewhere and there are probably adults supervising nearby.

On my block, kids play in their own yards (with friends) with minimal supervision, but I am in a county where cops actually have picked up children walking home alone from the playground, so...

Our neighborhood is full of kids outside all the time. However, if you see one you'll see 15 more. It's rarely a small group or just a couple of kids. It makes all the parents feel more secure knowing how many kids are together at once. They rotate houses where they hang out.

If they're in their own yards, one can't see them, so no, of course not. Of course, I can only think of 2 houses who have children in a 2 block radius, and none of the kids play in the backyard. They go to lessons and their friends houses - my neighbours have a stupidly small yard - too small for even a dog! I don't let my small person play outside in the backyard alone ; we are on a major walking route to the bottle depot and too many times someone has stopped by the fence to converse with my little one. Yes, 99% of people are harmless but you know at least one might be tempted to misbehave if they thought they could get away with it, or at least they're thinking about it... :(

The house a few doors down is a Dayhome, and THEY don't even go outside much! The whole basement was renovated into a giant playspace and so they don't have to go out to the park for outings. Less liability! ;)

Also we really don't have any undeveloped land in the city - all open spaces belong to someone, and if kids were say.... riding their bikes through a muddy field that was land intended for construction, yep, someone would call bylaw. Because the property owners would be held liable for any injury that occurred on said land...

You live in a sad town.

Yes I know. Does no one get snark anymore? I was just making a joke - one that appears to have bombed horribly, lol. Won't be the first time, won't be the last.

The other night in the other thread as I was typing out catalogue i was thinking about how the other poster had spelled it wrong. They spelled it catalog. :)

It is funny how Canadians use UK spellings but we do.

Kids go outside these days?????? I've never seen them outside in our neighborhood anymore. For awhile, they'd be out on their own when Pokemon Go first came out last summer but quickly realized there were bugs and it was hot so they quit going outside.

There is a new family who moved in across the street and they have a little boy who I only saw once walking to the bus stop for school.
I remember when my kids were little and they'd be outside all the time without supervision - and it wasn't that long ago.
