Runners' stairway from hell

What's interesting about that link to the ship deck plans is the Disney Wonder also doesn't show a "walking/jogging" thing, only a promenade on deck 4 but it does have one correct? (On the other ships it’s labeled.)

So the Wish not having one labeled on the deck plan doesn't really resolve what Disney was thinking.

Interesting. Have only been on the Dream class so far, but will be on the Wonder in a
few weeks so will check to see what the signs say on the ship.

The MDRs and lounges are designed to the minute detail, while the promenade deck, stateroom storage, and fixed flat-screen TV are misdesigned for the end user. Makes you wonder if the designers ever sailed on a DCL ship with family and activities or just stayed in the bars.
Ironically, those bars and adult areas (especially the deck) aren't even large enough for the number of guests on the ship. The ship's design is mostly targeted at children, but leaves out the folks that bring them there.

I think the designers got the assignment: Just make it different from the other four ships.
Like with the lack of storage in the rooms, they didn't think about who is going to use this ship. No proper customer journey for all types of customer.
I think the designers only thought from their own perspective, 'what would I like on a ship'?
Exactly. It's as if the Magic and Wonder were excellent but when designing the Dream/Fantasy, they were told to change it up some. So designers said "Let's put the aft elevator smack in the middle of Cabana's. Then we'll put the forward elevator completely within the adult area on deck 11." Here ya go, it sure is different!

Then with the Wish they were told, "This time make it even MORE different." So they just eff it up even more.
I'm really feeling like I have no desire to sail on the Wish. It's really not calling to me at all. :guilty::headache:
If they're going to change something, it should be an improvement. Don't just change things that work for the sake of change.

This is the dumbest thing.

At the school I volunteer at they have hall etiquette rules and like number 1 is to not run on the stairs.

You can die/be seriously hurt falling down stairs. Now I am not saying we should get rid of all stairs but let’s not add runners and walkers at all levels of abilities and all different directions to the mix.

I actually think someone high up who approved this should be fired.

This was a benefit/feature/value addition that literally would have cost Disney nothing if they had just designed it correctly.

I can’t think of another ship feature that’s “free” to the cruise company, except maybe views.
A few years ago we were on a cruise and a kid from the edge broke his leg running down the stairs. You know kids he was probably jumping or doing something stupid. I run up the stairs, but I'm a klutz and would never attempt to run down. I won't even walk downstairs without touching the railing. My DH on the other hand is more athletic and could do it. I can run 26 miles straight ahead, but don't ask me to do anything fancy.

Regarding the promenade deck, I forgot to mention that there is a gate at the aft end of deck 4 just before the stairs to deck 5 that is sometimes closed. I believe it was closed the whole first day of the cruise at least on one side. There is also a gated door on the forward stairs between deck 5 and deck 6 that is closed at night so that you can't go up and around to the bow.

I am fully disinterested in the Wish at this point. I was SO excited about it like a year ago and everything I've seen so far leaves a LOT to be desired from a brand new Disney ship. It really feels like the design team phoned it in, big time.

We almost exclusively use stairs on ships. Otherwise I couldn't eat five meals a day! I guess if you have mobility issues it would be a problem, but if you have mobility issues you aren't running either.
I was a runner until I was 25 then an auto accident which left me unable to walk down stairs. The track was nice for a fast walk. I struggled with race-walking but short distances are all I could handle for a while. Now at 58 I struggle with a fast walk. The walking/jogging track is nice because I can regulate my speed accordingly when I get sudden sharp pains in my hip. I love the flat track which is great for my balance and no fear about a face plant into a pothole or rubber treadmill. But I know I’m a fraction of the consumer they needed to be concerned about. But….
Wait to somebody falls and injuries themselves going up or down the stairs. It will happen eventually.
Some people participate and love a stairway challenge currently. Some people will watch those stairway runners and think “they make it look easy enough. I’m going to give it a try!” Going to be a few of those injuries.
Maybe dcl will rethink this design before they build the next ship
I see that too. People won’t make as big a deal on a 3/4/5 day ship as a 7+ day ship. I also see a towel rack, shuffleboard equipment stand, cordoned off concierge seating,…put up right in front of those stairs to slow/hinder those wanting to incorporate those stairs into their work out eventually.

You/ve not been carefully reading all the reports from the ship then. We are actually on board. Two adults well over 70 and we are finding no end of things that are of interest.

Another instance where people are focusing on what could be better not on what is actually there and is good.

We were on a September 2019 sailing and the weather made docking at Castaway Cay behind schedule. So, everyone that signed up for the 5K had to run it on the track. I cannot imagine trying to do that on this ship!!

For my mother it’s an issue because she doesn’t like stairs. She’s a very slow walker and I can see her not liking this and preferring the classic ships.

For those being concerned about running up and downstairs I mean dear God if you’re running then maybe just SLOW DOWN and walk. Nobody’s forcing you to run up and downstairs. And slowing down for a few seconds it’s not gonna put your fitness goals in Jeopardy

Sorry, we were eating.
After climbing the stairs from deck 4 to deck 5 (first photo) if you wish to continue around the front of the ship to the other side you must climb another set of stairs from deck 5 to deck 6 (to the bow):

Twice the hills! Nice! ;-) LOL I hope your meal was worth the extra hard run.

You don't run, right? Because you would understand why no normal runner would enjoy a track that requires stopping their run every half a lap. That would be miserable. And yes, it will affect your fitness goals when your heart rate drops twice a lap.

That's why the design is so baffling. People agree that you don't want to run on the stairs. That's the very problem. They don't agree that you can have a good run the way it is designed. Before this strange design decision, DCL had something that worked great already, not just for runners, but for those with disabilities.

I agree with others too. Some will still try to run and their will be injuries/lawsuits.

Well I mean unless you do Galloway which a lot of Disney runners do given that's how their races are. I personally do not do that and so running the Disney race was pretty miserable for me because every 60 seconds or whatever I had to dodge people that just stopped right in front of me cuz their watches beeped. It was the only race that the sides of my legs hurt after like I had played tennis or something. LOL But if they could just get their timing right they could galloway walk the stairs Ha ha

Haha. Galloway is fine for beginners, but I can't imagine doing it long term. It would drive me crazy!
