Runners' stairway from hell

The real problem is the asymmetrical railings. Ick.
lol! Speaking from a life safety engineer, the handrails are symmetrical (required on each side of stairs). But only one side has a guardrail (required when there is a drop of at least 30"). Handrails have to be 34-38", while Guards have to be 42". Definitely a conflict there between the aesthetic designer and the safety designer; probably should have changed up the guardrail so it didn't look the same as the handrail (a glass barrier would have been fine per code too).

I was telling my wife about this thread. She reminded me on one of our HAL cruises we did the Susan G. Komen fundraising walk on board, and it was raining. They had a walking track but they moved it inside to a deck with all staterooms. That wouldn't help runners on the Wish, but walkers could get their laps in without stairs that way.

It's good that they updated their gym equipment, but running on a treadmill is so boring. I prefer looking at the ocean. I've seen beautiful sunrises, sunsets, whales, orcas, seals, glaciers, fjords, bald eagles, dolphins, a statue of liberty, skylines, cities, and towns... a lot of interesting stuff running around deck 4. It's probably not such a big deal on the short cruises, but if they ever use this ship for longer cruises it will be. Both transatlantics I've taken the running track has been busy from sunrise to sunset. A lot of older folks like to walk... so it's not just for runners.
I agree running on deck is great, for a 3/4 night Back-2-Back I’ll make it with gym and Castaway Cay 5k. For longer cruises definitely see a problem and older folks. I was just speaking how I feel.

I have done a lot of walking on many DCL cruises and seen many runners. Probably half of them are or appear to be cast members, usually performers keeping in shape. (I do know a server who runs.) So I wondered what CM's do on the Wish. I asked a CM that we know and she said they have no special place so they run back and forth on deck 4 or on treadmills.

Boy I just googled “hand rail and guard rail” and if I ever built a house that info just ruined my staircase I had planned in my head. But someone will probably see the remodel before I even get on the ship. Leslie Wake that was nice details there. I was today years old before I found out you you mentioned. Glad they met the requirements and didn’t get in trouble for an infraction from the Big Boat Police just to be esthetically pleasing.

I have a balcony on Deck 6 above the forward promenade, guess I won't have to think too much about runners going by outside
