RUMOR : WDW 5th Theme Park - "Disney's Night Kingdom"

The numbers in the story don't add up

2000 guests @ $300 per guest is $600,000 per night in paid attendance

4000 CMs @ 8 hrs/night @ $20/hr = $640,000 per night in salary

Honestly, I do believe that Jim Hill knows people within Disney that know things. But I also believe Disney knows that Jim Hill knows people within Disney and they feed him possibilities as just a way to get a gauge on public opinion. Disney has some major confidentiality agreements and someone leaking something this big without Disney approving it is gonna get sacked.

And honestly, some of it makes sense. Disney wants to do something boutique park wise because it sees this as a possible lost revenue source. They also ARE gutting Pleasure Island right now... as it doesnt fit in with their goals for Downtown Disney. That means doing something with the Adventurer's Club (though I dont agree that they need to move it... if anything, they should expand it where it is because it is a tiny place and could certainly stand some more room... I think it could fit into the rest of DD quite easily, even without all of the other clubs).

So expanding the Adventurer's Club into a way of immersing guests into a new high end boutique park makes sense. As to the examples provided by Jim Hill as to possible attractions, I think this is where speculation comes into play.

Imagine if this was the draw (Characters used are just an example) -

You arrive at the park to find out that Hathaway Browne jets you off on a night time journey riding an Indian Elephant while you wear nightvision goggles to see tigers, orangutans, gibbons, and to catch a look at the ever elusive Sumatran rhino... of which there are less than 300 in the world.

Samantha Sterling drafts you into boarding 6 person open air trucks to visit all sorts of African animals on a small reserve recreation of the Ngorongoro Crater. The trucks each have their own authentic African game driver and offer hour long excursions to see lions, hyenas, water buffalo, zebras, etc. at their most active. The driver entices many animals up to the truck with the onboard attachment of browse.

Madame Zarkov invites guests into The Wondrous Night... a one of a kind effects laden show drawing animal spirits (holograms) into performance with african dancers as they recreate a sub primal african ritual. Animal spirits walk amongst seated guests until guests are pulled into the show to participate in the calling of the night.

Otis T Wren convinces would be travelers to tackle a walking trek through a South American jungle including a trek through an ancient cave filled with SAmerican microbats, beautiful waterfalls and 30 ft stalagmites, only to emerge into a forest where a bridge collapses behind them and the only way to get back to base camp is by a 500 ft zipline over a river of crocodiles and pirahna.

Emil Bleehall hosts the kids camp where scouters of all ages can come check out and pet all sorts of exotic critters including snakes, lizards, and crocodilians. Animal handlers demonstrate parrot vocalizations throughout the evening only to be one upped by the presentation of the largest snake in the world, the reticulated python.

Fletcher Hodges hosts a new artifact lounge... where REAL exotic artifacts are brought from around the world and put on display in a one of a kind museum.

To just think, this was all thought up in a few minutes. Just think what Joe Rohde may be able to cook up. I think it could be quite cool.

And how often would you pay $300 to do it?

Jim probably got something that someone put forward. That means nothing....Remember Beastly Kingdom, The original Epcot, the Roller coaster in the Germany Pavilion, the Eagle Pines Resort... (and that last one actually got a press release LOL!)

You're exactly right. I don't put much faith into anything Jim Hill says. It does sound like he gets an inside scoop, but give the info much more weight than it actually holds. A lot of what he posts sounds like something that someone within Disney did the research on, presented to the powers that be, but never actually comes to fruition. I'm sure there are tons of ideas that get tossed onto the table for consideration, but just because someone's done the research and written out plans for their proposal doesn't mean it got the green light.

I think I'd take him a LOT more seriously if he'd present the info for what it is: something that might be under consideration. Instead, he acts like every bit of info given to him is an absolute and it ruins his credibility.

I'm sorry, but I believe that this is pure rumor at this moment.
Disney could do so much better with 500 mil. I mean look at everything that is unfinished or needs to be tweeked still. Why not replace Body wars and the whole pavillion? It's been dead for years. And I am not a huge AK fan and I know a lot of people who are not also but, more rides and the old "Beastly Kingdomme" idea would be great. I already feel as if AK is not Disney. When I walk in I don't tear up as I do when I walk into Epcot and see SE or when I walk down Main Street USA and see the Castle. I think that Disney's Night Kingdom just seems stupid and another overly publisiced Jim Hill rumor. Where is the Disney magic in that park? Getting attacked by blinded lions and getting bitten by deadly hypos? Oh I see the pixie dust already! Give me a Mickey Mouse balloon and set me on my way!

How about finishing up parks? Replacing old closed rides? Not spending millions on something that only 2,000 people can do. I really doubt it that people will go back to this "park" over and over again like they do Epcot, Mk, DHS, AK.

Rumors make me laugh.

I guess I don't really get why no one seems to like this idea. It sounds really cool, especially for people who love animals. I have been to Discovery Cove and it was awesome. We are not rich, we just saved up to go. Granted it was just my husband and I, but it was totally worth it! We got to swim with dolphins, all sorts of reef fish, rays, and sharks. They also had a giant tortoise you could pet and feed, an armadillo, and some other type of furry animal that I can't recall at the moment. It was an amazing experience to be that close and hands on with many types of animals. I went to Busch Gardens and fed giraffes, it cost us $240 and I would have paid $1000. It was the single most moving experience I've ever had with an animal. I know I am a sap, but I totally cried at the end. Feeding hippos, playing with penguins and watching lions hunt, sounds like so much fun, and it would cost a lot more if you were to see these creatures in their natural habitat so for $300, and no vaccinations or grueling plane trips, it sounds pretty sweet.

Detroit zoo had giraffe feedings last summer. I think it was only ten bucks though!

Except Cm's don't make anything close to 20$ an hour even WHEN you factor in other employee benefits, SSI etc. Not even close.

That said - I still think the math doesn't add up here.

$20 an hour!:scared1:

Who's making $20 an hour!:confused3

Hold on let me check.....

Food and beverage currently goes from $7.75 to $11.82 depending on how long you have been with the company.

Might want to re-add your figures.

Then make up any numbers you like.

Its called the JimHillthagorean Theorem.

:teacher:

And speaking of math.. none of those numbers include the extra profits from:

- Exclusive "Nightly Kingdom" merchandise - sold at a premium price I'm sure

[ "I Survived the NIGHT" t-shirt anyone? ]

- Sale of alcholic beverages..

[ Hippo Sized Frozen Slushies with Giant Giraffe Straws ? ]

- Sale of not-included snacks and treats..

[ Tiger Striped Ice Cream with Mickey Cookie ears.. ? ]

Lots of money to be made ... I'm just not sure THIS idea is the right one to make it with.

You guys didn't figure in the cost to run the park though. (electricity) It can't be too cheap to run the lights there.

I can't see building a new park for this when they have DAK just laying there dark at night.
There are special hard ticket events held at DAK at night. I have attended a few and even seen fireworks in DAK. (On a MUCH smaller scale than the other parks of course.)
AC also handles special ticket events that let out at 9 p.m. I have even seen a few AC charaters at the DAK hard ticket events.
Would not be difficult at all to combine the two without spending a gazillon dollars.

A) Sounds like something for which I would have ZERO interest.

B) Sounds like the Disney Institute which folded like a wet cardboard box.

C) Sounds like another weak Jim Hill rumor.

D) I always temper my opinions here with "anything is possible" and Disney can certainly start this or any other idea they'd like. They don't need my advice, but...

E) See A above.

I couldn't really agree with you more. It sounds kinda exactly like Animal Kingdom (only at night). Considering the vast differences between the 4 current theme parks, I can't really picture them putting up something so similar to their most recent theme park. On top of that the whole thing sounds pretty far fetched, I mean come on zip lining over a pool of crocodiles. Doesn't exactly sound too safe or family friendly to me. On top of that let's not forget, WDW is probably the most well known resort in the world, with HUGE amounts of visitors coming in constantly, I highly doubt they'd build a theme park where the capacity is 2,000 people.

They would have one of those insert your face here and take a picture things.

My company this year is holding events where Universal will be closed to the public for a private affair as well as a private night at Citywalk. Another night Seaworld and Discovery Cove is closed for the company as well. I see this as a way for DW to get very large groups into a theme park and make very large bucks!

Jim Hill Media is a website that reports on all things Disney using 'unofficial', 'off the record' and other anonymous types of sources. Near as I can tell, he's a retired Disney fan living in New Hampshire.

Once upon a time he had a pretty good record.. but the last few years, it's almost as tho someone is feeding him bad info to make him look bad.

I agree this sounds like a way over priced off shoot of DAK. Theres no way I would pay 300 bucks to look at a hyena with Night Vision Goggles. That or get pooped on by bats in a cave. Been there-done that, it smelled terrible. The meal can't be that fabulous to up the value that much either. Sorry Disney count me out. When it was first rumored it was supposed to be an adult themed night park. I might have went for something like that. Maybe more adult type entertainment and shows with free booze.

Another website has a very good point about this proposed project,he thinks and I would agree that this would not be a 5th park, the main thing that leads him to this point is that guests would be checking into an "EXPANDED ADVENTURER'S CLUB",which would appear to be a start off point for different adventure tours throughout the whole resort. This is something I definitely would believe more than spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a whole new park in what appears to be a resounding "not into this project at all" overall feeling about the rumor that is being shown here. There would definitely be 200+ people daily who would be into spending $300 to do these so-called "Adventurous"things after dark that many other people can't afford or are just not into.None of the things mentioned about this project, feeding hippos, watching bats and hyennas after dark are things I wouldn't even shell out an extra $50 for but I know there's a certain amount of people out there for everything.
