RUMOR: Disney Planning for Walt Disney World to Remain Closed for the Rest of 2020?

Wonder how many hits that website has gotten, ca-Ching! Suggest finding a large grain of salt while you read it.

Not at all unexpected that Disney has multiple planning scenarios in place. They probably had a more generic sort already filed away

How can Disneyland Shanghai remain closed, when China reports less than 100 new cases per day, and WDW would open when the US reports over 20,000 new cases per day?
I think the CCP owns the majority of Shanghai Disney so they're probably calling the shots there. I don't know if Disney can survive with having the parks closed for the rest of the year. Hopefully if someone buys them, it's Apple.

I guess Disney should stop building new resorts unless they are going to also add another gate. The more resorts = more guests = over crowded parks. At this point I think Disney has already tipped the scale to far to the side of overcrowding the parks with all the new resorts they have added and no new gate to offset the added number of guests. Financially this isn't the time for Disney to add a new gate and it takes years to build one, that being said I would be happy if they just finished all the updates to the current parks. In Jan of this year the place was like a huge over crowded construction site. To many people and not enough attractions open to accommodate everyone.
I agree.... sometimes its down right miserable.

Well this helps to make up my mind. I was thinking of going late Oct, early Nov but was being cautious about making my reservation. But this has just swayed me to wait until next spring.
Why would you let this article sway you one way or another. This is just one of many scenarios and not the least has any more validity than any other wild rumor going around..ºoº..smjj

I don’t think the situation will be much different between Oct/Nov and next spring. There won’t be a vaccine widely available by next spring. Either we will find a way to deal with this virus over the summer or we’ll stay under these lockdowns through next summer.

Potentially relevant data point here. Hard to imagine that if movie theaters and sports events are not ok, opening theme parks that attract many out of state visitors would be.

One line caught my attention, He said people should be outside, which obviously bars and movie theaters are not,

Hmmm...I still hope he lifts orders enough for DVC resorts to open, but certainly sounds like any park opening will be very limited and take a while to get up to speed.

Given that beaches have reopened, if the Walt Disney World Resort remains closed through the end of August or the reopening is phased/limited, then our Plan B is Vero Beach.

Just a small point, but many Florida bars ARE outside, including many bars at Disney.

Source: Me. I’m pretty good at bar stuff.

Hospitalizations and deaths are lower per capita in the south. Louisiana being the exception. So despite shutting down less they are doing better than most northern states.
This is correct. It seems to not get the attention it deserves either. Along with the dearth of important knowledge about C19 the effects of the amount of daily sunlight, how intense the sunlight is, wind lead the way. Maybe the southern states all got lucky with when C19 arrived, maybe it is weather. We don't know but it sure seems like something has changed it in regard to NY and NJ in particular

I think the idea of "theme parks are outside but movie theaters and sporting events should not occur" becomes an interesting exercise.

Obviously, NHL and NBA are arena-based. Baseball and soccer stadiums are hybrid, and if you want to call them inside, ok.

But it leads to a question of what you need to close/not have available in a theme park if bars, movie theaters and sporting events are not advised. Just thinking through MK, that likely shuts TS eateries and inside dining areas. Even with guidance on queues, assume Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear, Laugh Floor, Carousel of Progress, Tiki Room, Philharmagic, Peter Pan, Small World, Haunted Mansion, Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Pirates. Probably need to shut down Astro Orbiter or have really strict elevator process. Obviously, if salons are still closed, BBB is shut. Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse and TS Island are goners because they cannot be cleaned between guests.

That is a serious cutback on experience.

I agree. It will be a weird experience for a while, and they will probably close most indoor venues. But I do think they will open the doors as soon as they possibly can, even if more than 50% of the theme park is closed once you get in. It seems like that will help with staffing too. They can rehire in waves.

I forgot: Every meet and greet is off.

The Washington Post says inflatable t-rex costumes are not protection against coronavirus, so we can only assume Pooh Bear isn't either.

It would actually be pretty funny if they did social distancing meet and greets where you stand 6 feet away from the character. That would be one for the photo album.

I couldn't agree more. I think when Disney spent all the time/money etc for Star Wars land, I think it was a missed opportunity to just build a Star Wars park. I also think Disney needs to stop adding "good neighbor" hotels to the roster. I'm finding the on-site perks to be less and less.
