Rude Post Office Employee

Not sure if it is the same everywhere, but I went to the library (in PA) for my kids new passports. It was so much easier and the librarian copied everything needed (apparently color copies not black and white) and put it all together to be mailed.

OP here - My son went today to the "rural" Wisconsin post office across the street from his university. 10a appointment - I told him he HAS to be there at by 9:50a. He calls me at 10:05a, and I answer in dread....."what" he said "all done, they were so nice - I told the lady about what happened on Friday - she called all the workers from the back and I had to tell them again" They were laughing at the insanity of it and appalled too. :))

tell me you tried to get a passport in a Chicago post office without TELLING me you tried to get a passport in a Chicago post office..

OP, I hope she doesn't get away with it. Our local post ofc had a bench for waiting customers to sit, but just my luck it was removed just before I had to go to the p.o. on an injured leg. i asked the clerk about the missing bench and she said that if we stood we'd be more likely to pay attention. um, since when does waiting in line require attention? I have since taken my "business" to a different branch, and the service was so much better I wrote a letter complimenting the clerk who was so helpful.

OP here - My jaw is dropped. We had "the wall" "go stand at the wall"
my boy did go to a different branch - I posted it ^^ just now.

I hate the Post Office. The service is horrible and even our delivery person does a half-baked job at best. I have had the same book of stamps for forever and I try to never use their services. I still very rarely receive mail that matters 99.9% of it is junk.

I know they are in financial trouble, but their service leaves so much to be desired. And these rude employees. The Postal Service and the employees all seem to think they are they only show in town and people need to tolerate their BS. Guess what? We don't and that is what is leading to its demise.

I had an issue with a post office employee renewing DD15's passport a few years ago but nothing like what you experienced.

Her biological father died years ago and the w Oman kept insisting I needed to get his signature on the application. I kept telling her she wasn't getting his signature as he is deceased, see here is DD's birth certificate with him listed as her father and his death certificate which is what the state department says is all that is required.

She again said she was told she couldn't process a passport application for a minor without both parents present. I asked her if she thought she knew better than the state department because they state when a parent is deceased a death certificate is all that is required in place of a signature which she wasn't going to get since HE IS DEAD!!!!!

She finally processed it but told me it wouldn't go through. It did.

For the OP, sorry about your experience!

Here's a link to make a complaint about a USPS employee, and IMHO this would get more attention/results than making a phone call.

https://usps.force.com/emailus/s/personnel-inquiry
You can describe your experience and maybe suggest to them to have an outside postal supervisor make a similar appointment for a passport with a situation like yours, and see how they get treated while in their "undercover" persona. There are rude postal customers so complaints over the phone may be dismissed as such, but if someone from within the organization experiences the level of service for himself/herself maybe it will shed more light on a bad employee.

how awful. sorry you and DD had to go through this.

That apparently doesn't work well in my area. Issues tend to get resolved better if Nextdoor is to be believed by dealing with the actual post office location.

As far as undercover person no offense but they probably are going to brush aside a suggestion like that. I'm sure they have quality control processes of their own and as much as this employee was a poor employee the USPS has a lot of other stuff to deal with that this will be a blip on their radar. They may respond back to the OP with the form filled out from the link above (and I'm not saying that's not a bad idea to do as well) but as for digging into it using a secret shopper type thing for just this one incident is sorta unlikely to expend the time and effort on it. The postmaster should be notified and they take it from there whatever it may be.

THANK YOU!! I did one as a complaint for the monster woman in Chicago and then I did another one as a COMPLIMENT for the folks at the Wisconsin one that were so nice and helpful to DS. YAY!!!

I agree, same with DMV employees, no expectations of them being nice or helpful.

There is NO question in my mind whatsoever I would have demanded to a) know her name or read if off her name tag, b) demand to know who she reports to c) make it your business to find out her Chain of Command. I'm old and I'm just tired of bad customer service. The PO is one of the worse and we shouldn't take it anymore. From anyone. Everyone has problems. Everyone has a bad day. 2020 and into 2021 has been a very difficult time for so many. NOT JUST HER. That is no excuse whatsoever when you deal with the public. If you don't like your job dealing with the public, get a new job. There are many people waiting in line to work with great benefits at a post office.

It's too bad you didn't think to pull out your cell phone and press Record on the Quick Voice APP to catch at least part of her insane and rude conversation with you. I'm very sorry you had to endure that.

Not all post offices are that way. I spent 3 months in Cocoa Beach, FL recently and their post office was like a breath of fresh air. I used it often to send things back home and each and every time I told them how wonderful they were and did the survey on line. I mentioned my suburban Chicago post office is definitely not like they are but should be.

I don't even know if its worth complaining and then if I do....to whom.

So Friday I took my son to get his passport for a 1p appointment that we had for a month (he was home from school). We get there early as stated on the website. We wait for the lady to call us (1:30 and I'm fine with that) She takes a cursory look at his papers and says - "go stand by the wall, I'm going on break". I asked her "how long is your break - is it 15 minutes or your hour lunch"? She went off on me "said its none of your damn business how long her break is" I said "listen, I'm all about the break - I"m union too, but we have something else we have to do at 4p" then she says "then go - leave, go do your thing.. and by the way MOM, this boy is grown, why the hell are you here?" I said - "that's none of your damn business" then she says "stop talking now - for every word you say, I'm adding 5 minutes to my break. So I had to shut up.

We go to the wall - my son asks me "mom, how can you let her talk to you like that? " I told my son that "we are at her mercy - she will have your application and she has the power to "lose" and all our information with it." then I thought about and realized I didn't want her to my our info, so we left.

Is there anywhere I can lodge a complaint? Does anyone really even care? This woman was so mean and abusive. After she screamed at me - another woman "at the wall" told me that "she (the postal worker) didn't like my kids being here, so she will take me when she feels like it" This woman had a 11a appointment and it was already after 1;30.

Maybe just typing this long post will make me feel better. (so far it hasn't)
Sounds like you were at my local post office!! The woman who works in there is an absolute beast, so many people have complained and nothing ever changes. The workers at the post office in the neighboring town laugh when we go in because they even know how bad she is. I’m so sorry that you had to deal with someone who is clearly on an unsupervised power trip, karma will catch up to her.

I would have started crying lol! It's sad that there are people out there who are that miserable.
